Brownie Troop 582, grand prize winners in Rio Rancho's Twinkle Lights Parade, say organizers failed on promised support including a flatbed truck, generator, and 20 sets of lights. The troop spent $70 on lights, rented a generator themselves, and received only a plaque and certificates after the parade.
The new modular elementary school site in Rio Rancho will go before Albuquerque Public Schools Board of Education on January 4 for final approval. Project cost about 2.4 million dollars for 700 to 900 students, with over 150,000 cubic yards of fill donated by AMREP Southwest Inc. APS to pay transport and regrading costs exceeding 500,000 dollars. Construction hoped to start January 1990 and school opening planned for August 1990.
Bentley will start around January 30 1989 after signing a 45000 dollar annual contract in West Palm Beach Florida. Mayor Grover Nast said the deal is firm and Bentley plans to move soon to Rio Rancho joining a diverse council. He will oversee city operations while Donovan handles daily tasks until Bentley is fully on board.
The Sandoval County Commission unanimously backs Soil Conservation Service plans to stabilize Black's Arroyo. Rio Rancho council agrees to start work with $100,000 matching funds. Planned measures include land treatments, a detention pond, and raising the Black Diversion Channel walls. Estimated cost is about $3 million with completion in three to six years.
