Open Weekend Kicks Off With Football Concert and Fraternity Parties

The fall term first weekend features a Richmond Spiders home game versus VMI at OCity Stadium 8 15 p m. A Saturday concert by the Shirells and the Drifters runs 2 to 4 p m in Millhiser Gymnasium. Tickets 4 in advance 6 at door stag 5 in advance 4 at door. Fraternities plan events on Old and New Fraternity Rows.

Judiciary Council Study Committee proposes opinion poll open meeting

A six member committee of Richmond College students and lawmakers studied the proposed Judiciary Council under Rich mond College Student Government Association. They debated including the Business School and planned a student poll and an open meeting to raise awareness among faculty and students.

Education Stressed At First Convocation

Dr. John N. Thomas of Union Theological Seminary urged liberal education for town sakes and personal growth at the University opening convocation. He noted Protestant roots in liberal education since the Renaissance and called for reaffirming founders’ faith while expanding knowledge frontiers.

Catlett Named Davidson College Basketball Coach

Coach Catlett will assume the post at Davidson College Monday replacing Warren Mitchell who resigned September 10 to head William and Mary. Catlett, 25, joined Davidson after coaching at Lewis Mills and West Virginia University where he was a three season letterman. He led the Spider freshmen to an 18 2 record his first year and posted a 51 20 three year mark. Davidson, under Lefty Driesell, had named a three man staff including the head coach.

Jane Hoge Elected WC Fills Vacated Offices

Jane Hoge a math major from Alexandria was elected social cultural coordinator for the Westhampton senior class. She will serve as senior representative to the Chapel committee and replace Judy Bailey who became editor in chief of the Care LEGIAN.

Shackleton Named Librarian At Law School

Jack Shackleton is appointed librarian and instructor in legal bibliography at the T. G. Williams School of Law. He replaces Hose M. Cabanillas, who served seven years. Shackleton, Hampden-Sydney honors graduate, will receive his LL.B. from T. C. Williams this June. He previously spent 20 years in the USDA and earned the USDA Superior Service Award in 1964 for leadership in price support, conservation, and feed programs in Virginia.

AEPi Becomes IFC Member At Monday Meeting

Alpha Epsilon Pi joined the Interfraternity Council after settling back debts. New IFC court appointees include Pete Shaw John McCormick Cli Altschul Greg Haycock Tom Watson and Richard Sinclair. Sinclair urged petitions for allowing girls in lodge spaces during weekends and noted plans to circulate on Parents Day and Homecoming. Sandy Tucker of Sliema Phi Epsilon was assigned to fix Old and New garbage collection.

ROTC Department Adds Two Instructors This Fall

The University ROTC unit greets two new instructors Captain Charles Y. Talbott USA Infantry and Staff Sergeant Aaron O. Edwards. Talbott a Virginia Military Institute graduate served in Viet Nam and earned the Bronze Star while on active duty since 1963. Edwards has seven years of active service, most recently with Headquarters Company Special Troops Supply Fort Lee. An early ROTC project will be a booth at the Virginia State Fair representing the University Cadet Corps.
