The Pan-Hellenic Council introduces two new rules for the 1929 Richmond College fraternity rushing period, effective before October 12. No fraternity member or alum may spend money on freshmen during pre-rush, and freshmen may not be entertained at fraternity houses during the pre-rush period. Existing rules prohibit inviting or pledging non matriculated students.
Freshmen on campus must follow a ten point Rat code issued by the Sophomore Class after a September meeting. Rules include wearing rat caps, green ribbon, garters, speaking first to upperclassmen, staying off the grass, and attending rallies in a body.
Pete N. Pastore, medical assistant to Dr. Pitt, informs the student body he will be at the Roger Millhiser Memorial Gymnasium doctor's office on Mondays Tuesdays and Wednesdays during specified hours.
Pi Delta Epsilon the national honorary journalistic fraternity will sponsor a freshman editorial contest at Richmond College. Winners will have their piece printed in the last Collegian before Christmas. Last year's rules allowed all freshmen to submit up to two editorials of four hundred words each with no topic restriction and a preference for local subjects.
The 1930 issue of The Web will include individual freshmen photos replacing the former group portrait, a new cover design, and a beauty section for Westhampton replacing the sponsor section. The section will elect women for beauty by the student body, with pictures of popular, athletic, and studious men also included.
The president’s office announced two fellowships at Richmond College for the current session. Thomas C. Yeaman of Martinsville Virginia holds the Patterson fellowship for athletics and scholarship and serves as Student Government president and a track team member. Eugene K. Ritter, associate editor of The Collegian, holds the V S Lawrence fellowship in mathematics and won the J D Crump prize in mathematics for 1928 29.
The Collegian will start a series titled Who's Who Among the Seniors featuring 25 installments. Each week highlights a Class of 1930 member for distinguished college achievements socially athletically or academically with a portrait sometimes.
Dr. R B Loving reports the Virginia Epsilon Chapter elected alumni and honorary members at a Tuesday evening meeting on September 17. Names will not be announced until acceptances arrive and a chapel notice will be made later this week.
Dr. F W Boatwright will be the speaker at Richmond University first vesper service in the Henry Mansfeld Cannon Memorial Chapel at 7 oclock Sunday evening. The program aims to add dignity and reverence to campus worship with a 7 45 pm closing to allow attendance in the city. Dr R E Loving previously organized the Sunday programs, now overseen by Dr R E Gaines who asks for full capacity attendance.
Jim Dailey president of the Y M C A announces a tennis net in the Y M C A building may be obtained for use on college courts. If Dailey is away the net can be secured from any other member of the Y cabinet.
Fifty-eight men qualified for the Dean's List for the second semester 1928-29. The list includes William Acree, B Randolph Allen, Robert Alterman, John Begien, Walter Bennett, William Berry, Lawrence Bloomberg, Fernando Brenes, William Bryce, David Buchanan, Ernest Buxton, Edward Carbone, William Carter, Clinton Clarke, William Copley, and Lawrence Bloomberg among others.
University of Richmonds annual Student Government Social will be held Friday October 25 in the Millhiser Memorial Gymnasium. Richmond and Westhampton College students will mingle for a gala evening of fun entertainment and refreshments. Tom Yeaman heads the Student Government with the senate planning a party to outdo past socials. Committees include Decorations Frank M Lacy refreshments John B Siegel entertainment W F Carter reception Wash Winn.
About forty freshmen and many transfers offered for University of Richmond Men’s Glee Club membership after the first meeting. Twenty to twenty five former Spider Chanters returned, highlighting a bright season. Directed again by E. D. Naff who has served without pay for three years.
The ninety eighth session begins with formal and informal openings at the Henry Mansfield Cannon Memorial Chapel at 11 30 Monday. President Boatwright notes unfinished interior work and grounds landscaping before a formal Oct 23 dedication during University Week. The Greek Theatre by Luther H Jenkins will be dedicated with Electra. A contract for a new Physics Building was set.
University Players announce Electra by Euripides as the season opener during University Week starting October 23. The new Greek theatre gifted by Luther H. Jenkins will host the production directed by Miss Emily Brown with Carolie Lutz in charge, Elinor Fry directing choral eurythmy, and Mrs F Flaxington Harker leading choruses.
Freshman orientation featured a Y M C A session led by master of ceremonies Jim Dailey. The Richmond College freshmen gathered Wednesday evening in the Roger Mill River Memorial Gymnasium for the meeting.
