Westhampton and Richmond College freshmen prepare for a joint reception in the Student Activities Building hosted by the Westhampton College Government. The four day orientation, led by Dr Benjamin Holtzelaw and William Re Mine, covered matriculation exams, placement tests, library use, and campus religion talks, concluding with tonight's reception.

Richmond Adds Aviation Course With Federal Aid
Richmond College expands its curriculum to include ground and actual flight instruction under the Federal civilian pilot training program. The college joins 166 schools approved by the Civil Aeronautic Authority with Byrd Airport serving as the flight site. Instructors include Ivor Massey Ed Guthrie and Joseph Macrs from the Richmond airport staff, with a new pilot to be added. Ground study on campus continues, and engines and aeronautics are introduced alongside ongoing courses.

Opening Vespers to open term at Cannon Chapel

Distinguished Professors Add to Richmond Westhampton Faculty
Four new professors join the Richmond and Westhampton Colleges for 1039 40, bringing total to 88. Annabel Morris Buchanen, John O Tob ley, Margaret Shelton Ovitchfield, and Richard Scammon assume roles in musical theory government physical education and speech and related arts. Dr Tob ley studied at Geneva and Johns Hopkins. Alma Leigh Smith named resident nurse at Westhampton College.

Gift Of Telescope Brings Stars Closer To Campus
A five inch telescope gifted to the University by the family of the late Dr W. Taylor opens a regular descriptive astronomy course on campus. Housed west of campus, it views all heavens and will be used by students from Westhanton and Richmond Colleges in two hour courses led by Miss Isabel Harris and Dr C L Allbright. The instrument, found in Martisburg West Virginia, was originally owned by a German schoolteacher and later studied Mars by Dr R E Loving and colleagues revealing polar caps and dark vegetation, enabling real research for campus astronomers.

Enrollment figures show rising university intake strategies

Richmond College Student Shop Reopens After Remodel
On return to campus Richmond College unveils a remodeled student shop along with upgraded lighting in dormitories and the Administration Building. Ralph P. Mayo known as Buddy Mayo now runs the shop which cost about 4000 for new fixtures. The shop features sandwiches cold plates school jewelry pennants and a new fountain display cases shelves and improved ventilation with a large fan.

University Players at the University of Richmond announce tryouts for Winterset to debut the new season. Auditions are Monday afternoon from 4:00 to 4:00 in the Playhouse with selection directed by Professor Alton Williams who notes hopes for a strong all around production.

A joint student government dance of Richmond and Westhampton Colleges will be held October 7 in the Weshampton Activities Building. Admission is free for all student body members. The event aims to foster social ties between the schools with SG officials moderating gatherings and mingling. Bill Re Mine and Annabel Lumpkin lead the organizing committees with band plans to be announced soon.
