Fraternity Lodge Project Seeks Five Signatures

University plans road and water facilities for a fraternity row with five fraternities SPE Phi Delt Phi Gam PiKA and SAE in talks. The lowest lodge bid is 24000 but exceeds expected costs. University to start work once contracts are signed and bids are aligned with university specs.

Gilley and Hellerman Win SG Posts in Special Election

Leonard Hellerman and Wellington Gilley were elected treasurer and Athletic Representative in a Tuesday special election. With only two candidates for posts vacated by Nelson and Long, polls closed early due to light turnout and both winners will serve through next year.

Survey shows fewer grads enter graduate training

Norman Dodl reports a 1949 Richmond College survey of graduates finds only 28 percent plan graduate or professional study, far below the usual 50 percent. Medicine, law, and theology lead, with many heading to Medical College of Virginia, University of Virginia, and distant schools like USC and Wisconsin.

SG Discloses Monte Carlo in Playhouse

The Student Government Association reported this week that students gambled in the Playhouse during lunch hours. The issue was to be investigated further with the Honor Council to judge jurisdiction.

UR Radio Guild Presents Hawthorne Play On WRVA

The UR Radio Guild will air a 15 minute radio adaptation of Young Goodman Brown directed by Alton Williams. Alec Finlayson adapted the script with a cast including Baxter Cassey Flora Zbar Fannie Craddock John Moncure Dan Riker Natalie McKis sick Geoffrey Layng and Charles Shaw. The tale follows Goodman Brown’s distrust of his wife and Salem citizens as he encounters the Devil and a witches gathering during a trip to Boston and a ride with Madame Nouchoir.

Web Yearbook Distribution Begins at Richmond College

A handsomely bound 1949 Web yearbook is distributed to seniors and faculty at Richmond and Westhampton Colleges after arrival of the first issues. About 427 copies were handed out Tuesday and Wednesday with 400 more set for pickup over the weekend from the Playhouse Web office.

Frederick to Head Honor Council at Richmond College

Incoming Richmond College Honor Council elected Phil Frederick a senior next year chairman for 1949 50 at a Wednesday night meeting. Lewis Booker also a senior was chosen secretary of the judicial body. They replace retiring Chairman Pete Singleton and Secretary Bill Gee and assume office next semester.

Richmond Honor Week Ends With Record Class of 1949

The University of Richmond tops 350 degree recipients in the Class of 1949, about 100 more grads than last year. Honorary degrees go to Dr. Edward Gwathmey Dr. Harold Tribble Rev. James Ivey and Rev. Vernon Richardson. Commencement runs June 4 to 6 with Alumni events, the baccalaureate sermon by Rev. Richardson, and an address by Dr Tribble.

Fraternity Grades Under Scrutiny At Richmond College

A college report questions fraternity scholastic standards, noting only two of Richmond College’s 11 social orders posted an above average grade in 1946-47. Nine fraternities fell below the all men’s average, with eight under a CQ level and 73 percent below a 1.0 average.
