Honorary degrees to four announced for Richmond commencement

Four men will receive honorary degrees at Cannon Memorial Chapel on June 6 as part of University of Richmond exercises. Dr. Harold W. Tribble and Dr. Edward M. Gwathmey will get Doctor of Laws, while the Rev. Vernon B. Richardson and the Rev. James H. Ivey will receive Doctor of Divinity.

Gilley and Hellerman Nominated for Vacant Richmond College Posts

Two Richmond College students were nominated to fill vacated Student Government roles after the resignation of treasurer Bo Nelson and athletic representative Shorty Long. Wellington Gilley would fill Long's post for the Student party, while Leonard Hellerman is the All-Campus pick for Nelson's treasurer seat. Sease said resignations were prompted by their upcoming moves to the Business School.

Frat Council Bans University Dances

The Richmond College Fraternity Council voted no on sponsoring Opening Midwinter and Final dances due to continuing financial losses. No Final dances this semester and no University dances unless another group sponsors them. Other actions addressed pledging in summer school academic requirements dating period and length.

Future Students Approve Charter for New Business School

University of Richmond School of Business Administration voters approve the proposed constitution at a Physics Building meeting. Dean Byers Miller announces an election for Student Government officers on Friday May 20 at the Playhouse from 9 a.m. to 3 30 p.m. Eligibility requires business school registration by Saturday noon.

Alley Physics Chief Named at University of Richmond

Dr Reuben E Alley Jr named head of the University of Richmond Physics Department for 1949 50, succeeding the late Dr Charles L Albright. An alumnus and Phi Beta Kappa member, he served as acting head after Albright’s death and holds prior posts at MIT and Princeton, with WWII radar service.

Golden Boy shines as spring finale at University Players

The Play ers stage Clifford Odets drama Golden Boy in Richmond with Hansford Rowe as Joe Bonaparte and Phyllis Barnes as the Newark tramp. Maurice Rubenstein as Tom Moody, Arthur Dremos as Poppa Bonaparte, J. C. Hantin as a gangster, and Will Osborn as Tokio lead a strong cast under William Maner’s direction in a brisk, engaging production praised for performances and pacing.

Annual Spring Concert by the University of Richmond Band

The University of Richmond Band under Mark Troxell will perform its Annual Spring Concert in Luther H Jenkins Theater Westhampton College. The program features first US rendition of Pindas a Greek military march and mixes semi classical and popular numbers from Barber of Seville to Hora Staccato plus arrangements of Glenn Miller songs and Juke Box novelty.

Letters Awarded To 126 BC Athletes For School Sports

At a recent Athletic Council meeting, awards were approved for 60 varsity and three minor sports and 66 freshmen for the 1948 49 season. Varsity football awards had been approved earlier. Prof W F Caylor said prizes would be presented before summer vacation. Cross Country honorees include Jimmy Sease Sam White Bill Winn Wilbur Hawks and Bill Jordan. Freshman Football names listed include Leo Antonucci Ray Breeden Hoover Britt Allen Bennett Johnny Mack Brown Dickie Byrd Bob Churn Vic Falls Billy Farris Jack House William Howell.
