McElroy to Give Main Commencement Address at Richmond

Dr Robert McElroy of Oxford will deliver the commencement address at the University of Richmond. He is on leave from Oxford writing a life of Jefferson Davis and gathering data from Richmond libraries. The program includes the Garden Party, senior supper, academic procession, and formal exercises from June 9 to 13 with two honorary degrees awarded.

Missionary from China speaks to Westhampton Y W C A

Mrs. McLaughlin, a Chinese missionary, spoke at the Westhampton Y W C A meeting on May 4. She described life in China, the call and message of missionaries, and noted famine, floods, civil strife, and communism as major challenges.

Rat Rules Meeting for Sophomore Class

Next year’s sophomore class holds an important meeting at noon on Monday in the Playhouse. The purpose is to draw up rat rules for the incoming freshman class. President C. P. Holland requests all members to attend.

Proctor Named to Head Players for Coming Year

Margaret Proctor of Westhampton College was chosen president for 1933 34, continuing the alternating leadership pattern with Richmond College. MacKidin Trawick of Bellefontaine Ohio will be vice president, Julien Gunn named secretary, Betsy Cannon treasurer, all active in Alpha Psi Omega and campus theatre. Open Night is set for May 15 with short skits and refreshments in the Drawing Room. Bus Gray notes coach Emily Brown’s return is not yet confirmed.

Fresh Week Plans Drawn By Students And Faculty

The Personnel Committee outlines Freshman Orientation Week September 11 to 14 with new changes. A faculty member will discuss fraternities and life, and a joint Richmond College Westhampton College freshmen meeting with Glee Club and University Players is planned. Upperclass matriculation urges students to consult advisers and submit schedules to the dean before the term ends.

The Samuel Chiles Mitchell Literary Society elected new officers on May 4. President B G Dodd, Vice President Eric T Sauer, Secretary W L Haden Jr, Treasurer R H Cavan, and Ed Haddock as representative to the Forensic Council. Meetings are Thursdays at 7:30 pm in the T C Williams School of Law. The group serves town students and boasts members on the college debating team and Tau Kappa Alpha.

Glee Club Delivers Creditable Richmond Performance

The Richmond College Glee Club performed at the Playhouse on a wet night, opening with Alma Mater and featuring Bach oratorio, Russian and Finnish folk songs, the Cuckoo Quartet, and a surprise bulling routine. Encores included Negro spirituals, The Musical Trust, Yaller Gal, and Invictus, followed by a well attended Millhiser gym dance with an excellent orchestra.

Freshman Team Debates Averett On War Debt Cancellation

Westhampton Freshmen and Averett College debated the Inter Allied War Debts Should Be Cancelled topic on Monday evening at Averett College. The no decision contest featured Mary Ellen Stephenson and Alice Turner for the affirmative and Carolyn Walker and Janet Spoone for the negative. The trip included college visits and a Dean's table dinner.

Interfraternity Council Brings Tommy Tucker to Finals

The Interfraternity Council announces Tommy Tucker and his Californians will headline Finals dances at Milchiser Gymnasium on June 9 and 10. Tickets cost 2.86 with tax. individual tickets around 1.50 for peak shows and 1.00 for the Saturday tea dance. The Californians return after a successful Midwinter engagement and coast-to-coast appearances on Lucky Strike.

Students Learn Honor Code and Council Procedures

The Student Government meeting last Monday explained the new honor code emphasizing fair student life and strict secrecy in reporting breaches. New senators Harold Lucas Fritz Freund and Dave Scott were sworn in as the Glenn Club led the group in Alma Mater and Victory Swing.

Westhampton Students Vote on Honor Code Changes

Westhampton Association met to discuss a revised honor code and pledged honesty in academic work and student relations. A ten member Radio Room Committee was appointed to oversee radio room operations, with Gene Newton named fire chief and assistants Elizabeth Clary and Nan Owen announced.
