PDE Taps Nine Journalists In Convocation

Nine student journalists from Westhampton and Richmond Colleges were tapped by Pi Delta Epsilon in Convocation. Tapped were Westhampton editors Sarah Louise Bishop Wilma Eldridge Lum Verda Slatten Dorothy Hughes Josephine Hoover and Richmond College editors Albert Saleeby Edwin Velenovaky William Luck and William Garvey. President Modlin praised university efforts and anticipated barracks completion for Summer School occupancy.

Virginia Union Choir to sing at YWCA vesper

The YWCA of Westhampton presents the Virginia Union University Choir for its last vesper program of the year at 7 15 p m May 15 in the Greek Theatre. The choir has fifty five mixed voices and is famed on campus for last year’s Chapel performance.

Crump Names Class Electees

Thad Crump announces the new officers chosen by the Junior Senior and Sophomore classes from votes cast May 6. Senior officers include Bill Jordan president and Harry Pattie vice president with Earl Dickinson secretary Bob Kilpatrick treasurer and Bill Hennant senator. Junior officers feature Stuart Massie president Basil Morrissett vice president Neil Cline secretary Bernard Dorsey treasurer Sattler Anderson senator. Sophomore officers are John Campbell president Aubrey Ford vice president Dan Ramer secretary Hunter Bernard treasurer Nelson Weber senator.

Mitchell Debating Society Wins University Tourney

S C Mitchell Literary Society won all debates in the Inter society Debates sponsored by the University s Forensic Council over the past week earning four points to claim the annual contest title. Albert Evans Harry Mears formed the affirmative team and Baine Harris Warren Russell the negative team securing victory for Mitchell. Keys emblematic of their win will be awarded to the four participants. The Philologians and Mu Sigma Rho each earned one point. The debated question was that the Truman Loan to Greece and Turkey should be approved by Congress.

Stable Gym Classrooms Playhouse Past Revealed

Morton Marks reports the Playhouse predates the University of Richmond and served as a barn shed skating rink and dance hall during an amusement park era. Dr. R C McDanel notes it became a chapel then gymnasium before fire in 1926 reshaped it into a science lab building.

Dorsey and Foster to Perform at University of Richmond Finals

Jimmy Dorsey and Chuck Foster are officially signed to provide music for UR Spring Final Dances at Millhiser Gym May 80 81. George Longaker says Dorney plays Friday semi formal 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. with Foster on Saturday concert and dance 4 to 12.

Dean Overton Announces Summer Enrollment Record

Dr. Edward F. Overton dean of the Summer Session reported enrollment reached 969 students and exceeds last year’s 840 record. He noted a 1,200 student cap for this summer and forecast continued growth.

Westhampton bus service replaces trolley at University of Richmond

University of Richmond students will ride modern $7-passenger Westhampton buses starting Monday at 6 34 am replacing the antiquated trolley line. The changeover follows months of delays due to strikes and other hold ups but officials predict a 15 minute faster trip to downtown Richmond during a 90 day trial. The new route from the power house on campus travels east via Roselawn Road to Towana Road and then onward.

The University Players under Professor Alton Williams present Maxwell Andersons Joan of Lorraine at WRVA Theater at 8 15 p m May 16. A downtown University production in a nearly sceneryless staging with twenty two students led by Irene Barbour as Joan.

Professor Alton Williams announced student discounts for WRVA Theater productions Joan of Lorraine and The Man Who Came to Dinner by University of Richmond and RPI drama departments. Tickets at $1.26 $1.00 and 65 cents go on sale next week at a Playhouse booth and later at the WRVA Theater box office. all seats are reserved except gallery.
