Spring arrives on the UR campus with warm weather and changed moods. Professors shed winter attire, cars get waxed, and students revive friendships as the season brings a wave of energy, love, and playful excuses like spring fever.
The eleven granite steps on campus originated from the north entrance of the old Richmond College building near Lombardy and Grace Streets. Built in the 1870s, the structure burned in 1910 and was demolished in 1914 after the university moved, with the steps saved and reused around the present campus.
Mortar Board and Omicron Delta Kappa hold a two day leadership conference for newly elected officers starting Tuesday April 5 at 3 30 in Keller Hall Reception Room. Alice Creath Mortar Board president welcomes attendees and outlines aims. Groups meet 3 45 to 5 30 with co chairmen guiding president vice president secretary treasurer senator and residence council discussions. Faculty advisors will assist and a parliamentary address by Mrs Preston Turner follows on Wednesday at 4 50 with dinner for invited guests. Dr Fred B Dixon John Marshall High School will close the event at 6 30 with remarks on leadership.
Lloyd Wright bar president will lead Richmond law school lectures for 1954 55 with four Virginia attorneys. Opening March 28 M Wallce Moncure will discuss For the Defense. April 12 David Nelson Sutton speaks on The Rural Practice. Sutton, ex Commonwealth's Attorney for King William County, has held multiple high profile legal roles.
A sudden 45 mph gust on campus brings down two large pines near the Administration Building. Officials say the trees were weak and cold, causing only minor damage as crews clear debris and return to normal operations.
The Omicron Delta Kappa fraternity invites 25 Virginia high schools to a May 7 1955 leadership conference at Richmond College Westhampton with 9 30 AM start. Delegates will hear panel discussions talks by business and education leaders and ROTC staff and join May Day festivities. About 100 attendees expected.
Richmond College Student Government met March 15 1955 to approve funds for the Greek Week Concert and Dance 500 and to purchase rat caps 450 and rat buttons 550 plus stationery 2000 sheets for the incoming class 1955. The body approved a 10 Red Cross donation and elected new Senate officers and clerks.
Tickets for the Greek Week concert and dance on Saturday April 16 may be obtained by writing to Greek Week Dance Box 222 University of Richmond or from Dance Chairman Dan Stern in A-12 Jeter Hall. The concert and dance cost 4.40 per couple while the concert alone is 1 per person. Stern urged advance sales noting the last big band appeared in 1948 with Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey and stressing student support to avoid another five year wait.
