Emily Shielinger has been elected May Queen of the Westhampton College May Day pageant to be held in May. The maid of honor will be announced later, with about 150 students participating in the annual display of drama music and song.
The town literary society holds its first regular meeting on Tuesday March 25 at 7 in the T C Williams School of Law library to avoid conflicting with University lectures. A committee led by W B Hoover with Pekins and Cosby will prepare the March 25 program, about twenty five students have joined, and the notice is posted in the Administration Building.
Westhampton Y W C A held its regular weekly meeting in the Blue Room on Thursday night March 13. The worship service impressed attendees as leaders discussed elements common to all religious creeds and the eternal sameness of human heritage through faith hope and love.
Dr Hy Me Neill Poteat, son of former Furman president, will headline a religious conference to be held the week of April 7 1930. The event includes Westhampton Richmond and T C Williams School of Law participants with daily morning convocations and afternoon forums led by students.
The Richmond College Glee Club directed by E. D. Naff, L. A. B., will perform a varied program in Mineral Virginia tonight as the first in a series of spring concerts. It features classical numbers and humorous selections with pieces like Richmond's Alma Mater and The Sleight plus ensembles.
This morning Dr. F. W. Boatwright president of the University and Coach M. U. Pitt alumni secretary attended a meeting of the Eastern Shore Alumni Chapter. The gathering took place in the Accomac County Court house, Accomac County, and the chapter is formed at the University of Rich.
New student government officers will be installed at the upcoming meeting in the old Chapel building on Monday March 24. Officers include G C Hendrickson president and Watt Fugate in multiple roles, with posts in Athletic Association and Board of Publications also listed.
Senior class invitations can be ordered through Pete N Pastore. The leather backed invitations cost forty three cents, cardboard sixteen cents, plain eleven cents, with engraved calling cards also available. A fifty percent deposit is required, and orders must be in by April 10.
A joint meeting of the International Relations Club of Richmond and Westhampton Colleges will be held Wednesday at 7:00 in the Westhampton drawing room. India will be the theme with Walter H. Bennett Jr speaking first on British Rule in India from invasion to present government.
A student government session discussed a Point System with pro and con arguments. E F P Overton suggested an investigation committee on point systems at other colleges. Charles Stokes urged reporting a Richmond College point system. The chair named V P Bodine R W Payne and George Schools to the committee. A motion to form a committee on Westhampton game book was defeated. Newly elected Student Government officers will be announced next Monday March 24 1930.
The Jitney Players present The Murder in the Red Barn by John Latimer at the Red Cross Building on April 4. The melodrama recounts the Maria Marten murder by William Corder set in 1827 with lively dialogue and ghosts. Tickets from William Berry.
The Richmond College debating squad started its southern tour on March 19 1930 meeting Wake Forest College that evening and Davidson College the next morning. They will debate Duke University on the topic The United States Should Renounce Extraterritorial Rights in China with Honts and Bennett opposing and Ellis and Henrickson supporting. The team has a 3 1 record this year with wins over Lynchburg and Rutgers and a loss to Bridgewater.
The University Players postpone the Ibsen production Wild Duck from April 4 to Friday April 11. The delay follows the Jitney Players booking The Murder in the Red Barn at the Red Cross Building on April 4. Work continues and officials expect an outstanding show.
The Westhampton Glee Club will present its annual concert on Tuesday March 25 1930 at 8 PM in the Red Cross building. The program opens with The Spinning Song from The Flying Dutchman and includes French songs Les Barclans and La Chanson du Tambourineur. it features poems set to music Gather Ye Rose Buds and How Sweet the Moonlight Sleeps Upon this Bank, plus unaccompanied Latin pieces Crucifixus and Ave Maria. Miss Helen LeGrande will sing three solos The Miller She Never Told Her Love and My Heart Ever Faithful. The Cipher of Love closes the set with a four part song and three selections follow.
The Interfraternity Council reports the first semester 1929-30 scholarship averages for fraternities led by Sigma Phi Epsilon. Averages include Sigma Phi Epsilon 85.01 Kappa 84.20 Phi Delta Omega 83.19 Phi Kappa Sigma 82.28 Pi Kappa Alpha 82.17 Kappa Alpha 79.83 Phi Gamma Delta 79.83. The overall average across fraternities is 83. Only members on or before the first day of exams are included.
