The Westhampton Glee Club heads to the Red Cross Building for its annual concert at 8 15. The program includes seven selections featuring two Palestina Latin pieces, two Rachmaninoff works, Schumann, a French song, and a Czecho-Slovakian folk song. Miss Laverna Harlan will perform The Robin Woman.
Bi annual Omicron Delta Kappa convention at the University of Alabama saw Dean W L Prince end his term as national president. Richmond College delegate Wellford Taylor presided locally while Dr G L Schram of the University of Pittsburgh Commerce Dept was named national president and Dr Long of Alabama became vice president. Founding member Dr William L Brown of Washington and Lee University was elected executive secretary.
At the Feb 26 meeting the club elected Lee Morrison as President with W F Carter as Vice President R W Cairnes as Secretary and A E Dance as Treasurer President-elect Morrison has two years of active club involvement and is considered well qualified.
University of Richmond’s victorious Northern debating team led by R. P. Johnson R. N. Sanford and FE. L. Honts returned to campus Tuesday amid student praise for defending the institution’s forensic honor after decisive wins over northern representatives.
Two prizes totaling fifty dollars will be awarded for the two best orations on the subject In Appreciation of Woodrow Wilson. The contest is set for Tuesday evening March 19 and will feature selections by the University of Richmond Men's Glee Club and the Little Symphony Orchestra under J M Crawford. Westhampton girls are urged to compete and a large audience is expected from across the lake with dates approved by college authorities.
Dr R C McDanel of the History Department will conduct the chapel services next Monday March 11. The following Wednesday Rev Churchill Gibson the new rector of St James Episcopal Church Richmond will speak, with Dr W D Carver of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and a Richmond College graduate having spoken last Monday and Dr Boatwright leading services on Wednesday.
The university on campus selects a Shakespearian show for commencement night. Miss Emily Brown announces the cast for Hamlet with multiple actors listed for each role and minor roles to be decided later. Last year the University Players presented Much Ado About Nothing.
An accident during spire hoisting damaged the chapel and its steel work when a ton and a half stone chunk broke from a shear bolt. A replacement stone is ordered and construction on other sections continues as officials aim for dedication before year end.
In a hotly contested election the Martinsville senior class selected a cane as this year's emblem. Lloyd Castor will announce the design and price within two weeks. The Prom Committee chaired by J. T. Kane plans talks with the Junior Class for the next prom. A memorial committee led by Wellford Taylor will select a class memorial after Mr. Taylor returns from the O D K Convention. Seniors urged to pay the play assessment by week’s end.
A college lists sixty-one students meeting the 33-credit, no grade below C requirement. Junior and Senior class members on the list may attend classes with optional participation this term. Names include Benjamin Randolph Alien and Robert E Alterman among others.
Mr Phillip Woolcott vice president of the Morris Plan Bank of Virginia spoke to economics classes on Saturday. He outlined the origin of Morris Plan Banks and gave a brief history noting the first bank founded by Arthur J Morris of Norfolk and that 107 banks exist now with Richmond’s branch as the fourth largest.
Thomas C. Yeaman of Martinsville Virginia was chosen president of the Richmond College Student Government Association after 309 votes were cast in a triangular race with Russell T Mann and John D Hooker. Yeaman is Lambda Chi Alpha member active in student affairs and currently leads the Men’s Glee Club and varsity track team.
Two Richmond College literary groups plan an intersociety contest with elimination trials in reading declamation oration and debate. Mu Sigma Rho will set the debate subject while Philologian picks its side. Date not set, with added musical numbers to keep interest.
