Veterans Benefit Increase Push Gains College Support
A packed meeting of veterans last Tuesday backed three bipartisan bills in Congress to raise college benefits. Veterans Club President Charles Reeze noted support from the University of North Carolina and widespread endorsements by Michigan State, the University of Tennessee, and LSU. The proposals raise monthly benefits for single men from 110 to 145, married men from 195 to 275, and married veterans with children from 160 to 205, with two bills by Democrats.

Westhampton seniors topped the 1956 Song Contest on February 29 praising their beauty of arrangements and tone harmony. Freshmen earned second for pep song and class spirit as judges cited musical quality and staging across all classes led by Miss Marjorie Rivenburg with Kay Beale and Hannah Coker among the judges.

Westhampton Mortar Board taps new chapter at ceremony
A new Westhampton Mortar Board chapter will be tapped for the twenty sixth time in a candlelight ceremony Tuesday night at 8 in the chapel. Leta May Tucker will lead the tapping with seven junior assistants as seniors dress in robes. Mortar Board selections rely on leadership scholarship and service. An alumnae reception follows in Keller Hall for the new members and their parents. George Riggs is the unopposed Student Party candidate for Business School president. other Student Party and All Campus party candidates face opposition in various offices. Richmond College voting takes place Tuesday March 6 between 9 am and 3 pm in the corridor between the College Shop and Post Office.

Deadline Set for Selective Service Fermentation Test
The deadline for applications to the Selective Service fermentation test is midnight March 5. The test will be given April 19 in the Columbia Building at 601 North Lombardy Street. Richmond boards are in the annex of 900 North Lombardy Street and forms will be provided to apply. Early mailing is advised for ministerial, ROTC, and other students not yet exempt.

SAE to Celebrate Century at University of Alabama
Sigma Alpha Epsilon marks its 100th anniversary at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa with a Friday March 9 celebration. Alumni and undergraduates join a nationwide closed circuit broadcast, with SAE leaders and members from Alabama and nearby campuses attending in the Alabama Student Union. J Washington Moore, SAE’s oldest past president, will attend. Activities include a pilgrimage and wreath laid on Abner Patton’s grave, a Friday initiation, a Friday night Commonwealth Club banquet broadcasting the event, and a Saturday Founders Day Dance at the Hotel John Marshall.
