Plans for the Seventh Annual High and Prep School Declamation Contest to be held at the University of Richmond on February 12, 1923 are under way. The date is set and letters are being written to prep and high schools to boost participation amid interest from students. Continued on page 6.
Westhampton girls topped Eighty Dollar Hill by filling a wagon with dimes quarters and dollars to fund delegates to the Y W C A Conference in Blue Ridge North Carolina in June. Miss Lumpkin led the balcony group in singing as the event raised spirited support for the trip.
Prof G B Baker founder of Harvard 747 Workshop will deliver a series of lectures on dramatic writing at the university next week. Eminent speaker to be brought here under the auspices of the Thomas Foundation of the University of Richmond and of the Dramatic Clubs of the University and the College Club of Richmond. Many Richmonders and students expect to attend.
A radio operator recalls a cold January Atlantic voyage aboard a vessel bound for America. The constant turbine hum and wireless chatter push some into monomania as he recalls crossing in darkness and hearing German Telefunken submarine signals. A dull knock interrupts talk of Paris among crew.
Deaths in two families and several illnesses caused multiple absences among faculty and students this week. Chemistry professor Dr Garnett Ryland was away for several days due to a family death. Spanish professor Dr Emil Saverio missed classes last week and this week because of illness. Student Ruth Staude also listed in the readable portion.
The renowned Harvard drama expert Professor George Baker will give three lectures at the University of Richmond next week on "The Drama." The first talk starts Wednesday at 4 PM in the Red Cross Building at Westhampton College, focusing on General Treatment of the Drama. Members of the College Club of Richmond oversee arrangements.
Freshman Class President C I Kite forecasts more than 200 members will attend this year’s Rat Banquet at Murphys Hotel dining room in February. While exact headcount is not set, prospects are strong for a large turnout as the leading event of the year and efforts to surpass past banquets intensify.
Athletic authorities announce free admission for Westhampton girls will be suspended for the William and Mary game tomorrow night and the Florida contest to guarantee seats for town visitors. Manager Harry Riddle urges bringing athletic association coupon books as doorkeepers will not admit anyone without a ticket.

The first intra-mural debate between Westhampton and Richmond College of the University is scheduled for tomorrow night at 7:30 in the Richmond College Auditorium. The event, ending before the Spider Indian basketball game, marks the debut of Westhampton ladies in debating.
Three Red and Blue cagers face a tough week with games against Williamsburg Virginia and Lynchburg. The Spiders show improvement and expect close battles as they travel to Virginia and Lynchburg after a season opener versus William and Mary.
Dean W. L. Prince announced plans for the largest Summer School at the University of Richmond Westhampton campus. The session runs June 15 to July 27 with expected enrollment over 200, including Z. C. Williams School of Law students. Enrollment last year was 143. The program offers college work by professors with the same standards and credit toward a degree.
