The Richmond Spiders beat the William and Mary Indians 31 to 15 in the new Roger Millhiser Memorial Gymnasium. It was the third varsity game in the new arena with 1100 spectators, and the crowd included many Billtown supporters.
The Philologian Literary Society debated That France Is Justified in Entering the Ruhr District last Monday. Judge Hillis Miller read the decision. Mr. Green won the debate and was praised for the best speech and strong refutation.
Furniture designed for the memorial room in the new Richmond gymnasium arrived from New York and will be installed after the stone floor is finished. The set includes twelve Windsor chairs a large central table four library sofas six arm chairs and two wing chairs all heavy leather covered. The floor is expected to be completed within a few days enabling final building completion.
Westhampton college girls canvassed Richmond early Friday to sell Shrine Circus tickets. They earned a share of proceeds toward the Woman's Building fund, but overall sales totaled 675 dollars as the effort stretched across the town.
On Monday night the Mu Sigs program favored a bond issue for Virginia roads with a prayer by chaplain W F Cuthriell and readings by L C Davis and an oration by E W Puryear.
Professor George Pierce Baker of Harvard, founder of the Harvard 47 Workshop, speaks at 8 oclock in the university auditorium under the Thomas Foundation. He urges receptive audience judgment after viewing the full play and cautions against judging early.
The first Richmond College versus Westhampton College debate drew over 500 attendees in the college auditorium. Four of five judges favored the young women speakers Miss Louise Cooper and Miss Emiline Stearns for the affirmative against Warren G. Keith and J. Hillis Miller.
Departing from the college cafeteria tradition, University of Richmond ministerial students escorted the Sky Pilots of Westhampton to Murphy's Hotel last Friday evening where the annual banquet was held in their honor. About sixty attended.
The Virginia Press Association formed a committee to buy a silver laying cup for the nearest printed best arranged high school or prep school paper in the Virginia Interscholastic Publications Conference. The cup goes home after three wins. An awards committee will visit the University of Richmond to review entries submitted to The Richmond Collegian. President Harrison will invite two speakers for the program, one representing the dailies.
