Faculty and students plan a Journal-Arts Club to raise campus culture. The group will host cultural evenings and foster writing and discussion beyond the classroom to rebuild Southern College standards.
Professor Rolvix Harlan will lead Vesper services next semester and arrange speakers to sustain the high standard set by Professor R. E. Gaines. On January 28 he will address the William Byrd Chapter DAR on World Peace at the Ginter Park Community House.
Numerous University of Richmond faculty and students attended the annual basketball game against William and Mary in Williamsburg Virginia. The crowd included Professor Caylor Dr McCary Coaches M Dobson M U Pitt and Doctors Harlan and McDanel as part of the university’s spirited lineup.
Registration for the second semester began yesterday. Class cards for all students are in the treasurer's office for distribution. Those changing courses bring cards to the Dean's Office. A late fee of five dollars applies if registration is not completed by Monday February 3.
The forensic council corrects the subject for the all southern debating trip as United States should renounce its extra territorial rights in China. Debaters will face Wake Forest Duke Davidson Mercer and other colleges in February preliminaries open to all students.
At a Pi Delta Epsilon meeting held last Monday afternoon the annual Freshman editorial contest was postponed to May 3 1930 due to few editorials submitted. If submissions fall below fifteen next year the contest will be cancelled. The judges committee is named.
The Westhampton College senior class sponsoring the February 7 prom at the Country Club of Virginia held a meeting to appoint the organizing committees. Interest and enthusiasm were shown by all, with assignments distributed among activities, decorations, and chaperones.
The Robert Schalken Foundation of New York City sponsors a prize essay contest for University of Richmond undergraduates on Taxation of Land Values. Prizes include 100 dollars for first, 50 for second, and five honorable mentions of 10 dollars from the Annie C. George Prize Fund. The subject follows Henry George's teachings with required rules to be observed.
The student body is informed that all representation fees for The 1930 must be paid in full by February 1, 1930. Unpaid lists were distributed among business staff with names and groups assigned. Students should contact the responsible staff member for their group to settle fees or risk forfeiting rights to this year’s annual.
The Y. W. C. A. sponsors six meetings to promote understanding of today’s major faiths. The first session features the Quaker religion led by a designated speaker.
Dr. S. C. Mitchell starts a five lecture series on Omitted Chapters in History at T. C. Williams School of Law Building February 3. Topics include Was Jefferson the Author of the Thirteenth Amendment Abolishing Slavery and Shall We Have a Secret Diplomacy.
On Tuesday January 14 twenty six members of the University of Rochester Men's Glee Club dressed in tuxes for a downtown photo session to adorn posters and year advertising materials. The group size exceeds last year's. The concert team roster is not yet chosen. Spider Quartette members include T. W. Sampson.
Bids are being received by President Boatwright for a radio set to be given by the Trustees of the University to the Richmond College Y. M. C. A. The set will likely be installed in the Y. M. C. A. within a few weeks.
At Richmond College a January 20 1930 meeting saw intense debate over abolishing the Student Government Association. A secret ballot vote 196 to 32 defeated the motion to abolish the governing body after delays and parliamentary confusion. John Currie favored retention as J B Dailey spoke next.
University of Richmond reporters formed the Local Reporters' Club in The Collegian office. About twenty students attended the Monday gathering, with top editors from Richmond and Westhampton Colleges. H. A. Stephenson was elected chairman and named a program committee and a constitutional committee with listed members.
At Westhampton College a Freshman Class meeting last Tuesday unanimously elected Winnie Larrie of Jamaica NY as president. The slate includes Louise Dinwiddie as vice president Isabel Taliaferro as secretary Marion West as treasurer Caroline Cutsheon as cheer leader and Ruth Pritchard as hockey leader.
