Final examinations for the first semester run from January 19 to January 28 with nine days allocated for study. Most exams occur 9:00 to 12:00 daily, except freshman English and mathematics which are afternoon. Second semester begins immediately after finals.
Westhampton Hotel Green Room hosted a Saturday nine to eleven social with Mr. Francis Sykes Mr. Lavernus Harlan and Miss Trudi Ryland as hosts. Music from Paul Whiteman's orchestra with Johnny Marvin and Ed Smith performed Kiss and Make Up. Buffet supper followed. attendees included several local and out of town guests.
Web proofs for the 1928 Web were turned in to the White Studio representative last Monday on the campus where students ordered photographs. Selected proofs should arrive by early February and be sent to the ravers. The photographer will return to the campus for basketball squad pictures and possibly additional campus scenes.
Westhampton College freshmen held their first birthday party in the Red Cross building last Friday. Juniors were invited by their sister class as pirates themed costumes and a pirate program concluded with dancing beside a large red and white birthday cake.
The committee reports the Student Government Association constitution revision nearly finished with debate expected at last night Senate and a public reading at eleven this morning. Students are urged to read the draft posted after discussion and attend the next session to weigh any debatable points before final approval and implementation weeks later.
The English departments at Richmond and Westhampton Colleges announce final Freshman theme subjects for this semester. The six topics, suggested by the American Chemical Society, include health and disease, enrichment of life, agriculture or forestry, and national defense. Themes may count as class work and compete in Lofty.
The closing date for the editorial contest among Richmond College freshmen by Pi Delta Epsilon is moved to 3:00 PM Wednesday February 15. The winning editorial will appear in The Collegian on February 24. The extension aims to give more freshmen time to enter after the holidays.
Westhampton College faculty held a 6:30 dinner following a Tuesday meeting. A series of bi monthly dinners and conferences on educational topics will alternate with Richmond College meetings. Lough Woodfin Ryland organize the Westhampton program with R C Astrop lecturing on psychological tests of freshmen.
The Richmond College Chapter of Pi Delta Epsilon decides to meet twice monthly on the first and third Tuesdays. At last Tuesday's meeting plans were laid to boost campus publications especially among freshmen and members pledged to recruit first-year students for staff positions. Since starting a year ago at Thanksgiving the fraternity has influenced the Collegian the Messenger and the Web.
Mu Sigma Rho Literary Society will install mid year officers at its next Monday evening meeting. Graham S. Goode becomes president, succeeding Perry R. Stubbs. New officers include W. B. Watson vice president W. H. Bennett treasurer B. N. Denham secretary Joe Nettles hall debater H. B. Dixon chaplain C. H. Ross sergeant at arms. Over twenty members were new enrollees this session.
Twenty men from the Richmond College Glee Club form the Concert Club to sing at entertainments and similar events. Haddon Dudley is named bass soloist and W Sheriff violin soloist. The quartet includes H B Dixon first tenor Paul Scarborough second tenor J C Harwood baritone and Lloyd Castor bass. An itinerary for the second semester may include trips to Crewe and Farmville Virginia.
The Philologian Literary Society held installation exercises for newly elected officers last Monday night. Outgoing President W. Lee Smith thanked members for their loyalty and wished his successor a pleasant term. W. S. Norman, to lead the organization until April, pledged continued growth and improvement.
Review by C. S. D praises the December Messenger issue as potent literature. It cites Boileau on literature’s power to move emotions and critiques college publications for false realism and romantic fatigue.
R. W. Edwards W. S. Norman and H. M. Herman will represent the University of Richmond on a southern debating tour next month arguing the negative side of the resolution that the United States should cease to protect by armed forces capital interest in foreign countries except after formal declaration of war. Alternate H. L. Smithers. They will face Furman South Carolina and Florida before returning to debate Rutgers on the affirmative at home in March.
John W Kincheloe delegate from the local YMCA and Ministerial Union will report next Tuesday on the Tenth Quadrennial Student Volunteer Convention held in Detroit from December 26 to January 1. About 4 000 students attended across America and other continents at the Shrinite Cathedral.
All students who wish to take the course in social hygiene meeting West law requirements for a teachers certificate are requested to notify Dean W L Prince in writing as promptly as possible. As soon as notifications have been received plans will be made for offering this work if there is a sufficient number of students requesting it.
