Student input urged on University Social Committee rules

The Collegian outlines two plans for student representation on the University Social Committee which is currently faculty only. One plan would add a student member with voting power, pending Board of Trustees approval, while the other would create a student committee to advise on rules at designated intervals each semester.

Westhampton Plans Double Dances After Examinations

Westhampton students prepare two dances for early February. On February 2 the Junior Class hosts a card prom led by President Theresa Carter, formal for both sexes. The following night the Senior Class holds a break dance with bands expected to provide Richmond social status. Further details will appear in The Collegian.

Collegian to Hold Web Who's Who Balloting This Week

Web ballots distribute today and tomorrow for the annual Collegian popularity poll at University of Richmond and Westhampton. Voters choose best all round best looking best athlete most intellectual and most stylish with separate college ballots and cross college looking for the finest. Ballots due Tuesday noon with results to appear in the next Collegian and yearbook photos of winners.

Quiet Hour for Exams Set by Richmond College Senate

Richmond College student senate urged a nightly quiet hour beginning at 8 o clock in dormitories during exam period. President Daley said the rule would be enforced rigidly and any noise disturbance should be reported to a senator for action.

Debating Team Announces Schedule and Topics at Richmond College

Richmond College debaters led by manager Richard McCrone reveal topics for the season including powers of the U S president, NRA permanence, and Germany's League of Nations withdrawal. First debate with Roanoke set for February 15 with multiple engagements listed through mid March and a spring tour planned.

Westhampton Pictures Virtually Completed

Westhampton Pictures will finish all photographs for the Tower this week including individual and group shots. Seniors lead in the subscription drive with a 100 percent average, juniors at 85 percent, and sophomores plus freshmen around 80 percent. The activity slips are being distributed and will be finished soon with Marydee Lowe as editor and Julia Donohue as business manager.

Opera discussed at Co-Ord Chapel

Monday chapel was donated by Westhampton to the opera which comes to Richmond on January 22. Mrs Harker summarized composers of great operas noting Puccini Bizet Wagner and Wagner’s influence. The piece highlighted Wagner as a pioneer of musical drama and motif use and called him the greatest opera composer.

Midwinter Dances Set by Interfraternity Council

The Interfraternity Council approved February 9 and 10 for the annual midwinter dances. They will run Friday 9 to 1 and 4 to 12, Saturday 9 to 1 and 4 to 6 for a tea dance. Admission is 2.50 for the set, single nights 1.50, tea 75 cents. An orchestra is being sought from major bands, with options including Casa Loma and Hal Kemp among others.

PDE Chapter Opens Editorial Contest For Freshmen

The University of Richmond Pi Delta Epsilon chapter announces a broader editorial contest open to all students except Collegian staff. Aims include testing new applicants for reporting and business roles on The Collegian and introducing standardized tests to replace informal hiring practices.

Erskine to Speak at February Honors Convocation

Dr. John Erskine a noted American literature figure will address the second annual honors convocation in Cannon Memorial Chapel during February. He has taught English at Columbia since 1916 and led educational boards, chaired the Poetry Society of America, and earned the French Legion of Honor. His celebrated books include The Private Life of Helen of Troy and The Enchanted Garden.

Collegian Adopts New News Gathering Methods On Campus

The Collegian announces policy changes to include student reporting staff and fixed office hours. Rooms A and B will accept student input Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays 11:30 to 12:30 and 12:30 to 1:20 on other days, starting January 2. The Web staff adopts similar hours in Room C and the Web office.

Council Screens Thirty Applicants for Dobson Successor

The Athletic Council reviews more than thirty nationwide applications to replace Coach Frank M. Dobson who resigned before Christmas. No final results given. aim to name a football mentor by spring practice. Options include splitting duties between two coaches and names such as Gus Webbell Jimmy de Hart and Monk Younger. Mae Pitt discussed but unlikely for the post.

Mortar Board to Award Class Trophy at West Hampton College

West Hampton College will honor the class with the greatest campus involvement by Mortar Board. The award will consider cooperation and spirit, campus atmosphere, and initiative. A scholarship for the top ten percent of each class will be given after the first semester to recognize academic excellence.

Junior Women Hold Class Birthday Dimne

The junior birthday, usually set for Twelfth Night, was postponed to January. Freshmen sang to their sister class before breakfast and juniors wore their color all day, receiving candy. A formal banquet capped by a Drawing Room reception followed in the evening.
