A Richmond College Delta Epsilon Sigma survey reports over five hundred students favor a compulsory budget for next year. After interviewing attendees, the committee notes many absentees spoken to and expects 90 percent support when the body is completed. Cards will be submitted to Dr. Boatwright with fraternity petitions after Christmas.
The Interfraternity Council met to form resolutions addressing the growing practice of crashing dances without invitations. A committee including Russ Darden Honury Whalen Clarence Gray Aubrey Eflett and Bill Groth will draft actions to be published in The Collegian after adoption. A follow up meeting for all fraternity men and pledges is set for January 19 at 8 pm in the Chemistry Lecture Room where Clarence Gray will report on the National Undergraduate Interfraternity Conference in New York during Thanksgiving Week.
Richmond College notices urge prompt budget fee payment with initial $7.50 due January 4 1932 and rest by February 4. The college faces financial distress as activities lack backing. Photographer sessions run January 11 with pre Christmas appointments through staff at the campus offices.
Westhampton's W C A hosts its annual Christmas service at Kilbourne Farm next Sunday at 3 30. Glee Club will sing carols and Louise Dinwiddie will tell the Story of the Other Wise Man. Gift boxes will be sent from Westhampton to the farm on Saturday December 19.
Dr Holtzclaw professor of philosophy at the University spoke to the Ministerial Association at the YMCA on Thursday evening about why he believes in the Bible. The talk framed the Bible as grounded in philosophical and psychological truths and Dr Harlan attended as a visitor.
Lawson H M Cooke secretary of the Virginia State Chamber of Commerce spoke at a convocation Friday. He contrasted current economic gloom with a hopeful view of ten to fifteen years of progress in Old Dominion noting Virginia’s wartime and postwar resilience. He cited 5 percent unemployment among preexisting workers and highlighted Virginia’s growing industrial role alongside tobacco and agriculture, including rayon production comprising a large share of national output.
The petition from Richmond College students asking for a longer Christmas break was refused by the administration. The vacation remains as planned from December 22 at 1 o'clock to January 4 at 10 o'clock.
Mu Sigma Rho Literary Society won four debates with no losses in the intersociety series on the motion that installment buying in the past decade has harmed U S economic stability. They defeated the Samuel Chiles Mitchell Society and the Philologians, with the Philologoans' negative team defaulting to Mu Sigma Rho. Final standings show Mu Sigma Rho undefeated and Philologians with one win two losses.
The Forensic Council will hold try-outs on January 12 for intercollegiate debates in the first semester. Speakers may present eight minute speeches on the topic that installment buying has harmed national economic stability. Faculty judges will select five or six debaters to join last year’s team for Richmond College’s season.
Mary H Ryland is elected May Queen by the Westhampton community on Wednesday. Richmond College schedules first semester exams from January 1 to January 29 with morning tests and two 2 PM exceptions for Freshman English and Mathematics.
Valerie Le Masurier was chosen to play Gloriana the Fairy Queen at Westhampton May Day 1932. Mary H. Ryland was elected Queen of May after a spirited discussion. Both seniors are active on campus with Ryland as house president and Mortar Board member, Le Masurier as Messenger editor.
At a Monday meeting of the Westhampton Debate Club the tentative varsity schedule was set with opponents Temple New York American New Jersey Pittsburgh and West Virginia. Debates occur in late March and team personnel will be chosen soon. A round table discussed the resolution Capitalism As An Economic System Has Failed. The team aims to sustain a strong 1932 season.
Plans for a new Biology building to replace the current lab facility will be finalized soon. President F. W. Boatwright says the contract may be awarded early next year and construction could begin in time for the Centennial Celebration in May. The U shaped design adjoins the Physics building with three entrance sides at an estimated cost of 135 000 to 140 000 dollars and about a year to complete after grading near the Administration building.
