Frats Organize Help Week for YMCA Camp Richmond

The University of Richmond Interfraternity Council launches a Help Week from April 30 to May 2. Eleven fraternities will clear underbrush cut logs and prepare Camp Richmond as a replacement for Camp Orapax burned last year. Andre Nielsen IFC chairman leads with Don Beaman and Fred Bissger as assistants. They meet at Jeter Hall then drive to the camp for daylong work.

YMCA Elects Officers at University of Richmond

YMCA election on Thursday April 17 chose Mac Shotwell as president for the coming school year. Walt Jackson Hugh Dupree Tom Downing and Bob Scott were elected as vice president recording secretary treasurer and corresponding secretary respectively. At the State Student YMCA Conference Hampton Institute elected Don Beaman as state president and Larry Matthews as state secretary.

The Virginia Social Science Association’s 25th annual meeting brings 100 plus professors to the University of Richmond. John H. Colburn and Gurtis M. Dozier headline the opening session at 10 30 AM with panels on federal state roles and partisan outlooks.

Phi Gamma Delta Dominates Fifth Annual Greek Week

Phi Gamma Delta Sweeps the University of Richmond Greek Week for the fifth year winning the song fest and Olympics. They total 40 points, beating Sigma Phi Epsilon at 22 and Lambda Chi Alpha near the top with a carnival win. The Carnival in Millhiser Gym raised funds toward the Student Activities Building PA system. George Aldhizer accepted the Berry-Burk trophy as Phi Gamma Delta’s win was announced at the Greek Week dance featuring the Newton Thomas Quintet.

Annual May Day Program Presents Nutcracker Suite Theme

Westhampton's annual May Day features an adaptation of Tschaikowsky Nutcracker Suite directed by Mrs. Elizabeth House and Orchesis. Maria and the nutcracker prince journey through fairyland with toy soldiers and dancers, followed by Coro nation at 3 30 and a lantern parade at 7 30 led by the freshman class. The Steadfast Tin Soldier puppet show, Queen Joy’s Ball, and May Day coordinators are noted with Beverly Gilbert as chair and staff listed.

Senate Plans Next Budget For All Campus Funds

In the April 19 Senate meeting the budget process was set to require a letter and hearing from all organizations seeking funds. Budgets must reach Student Government Secretary Joe Prussack by May 2, with reminders sent. The treasurer reports financial delays and a pending transfer from Dick Jones to Jim Sipe. New senators Sam Taylor and Bob Evans were sworn in as terms of Marshall Tuck and Bob Boggs ended. A report on intramurals called for better refereeing training, new league drawings, possible insurance, and a review of eligibility rules. Dick Howard was elected president pro tem to preside in Ward Harkyader’s absence.

ROTC Federal Inspection Highlights Parading Units

The Air Force and Transportation ROTC units staged a joint parade during the annual federal inspection. Col Riley McGarraugh praised cadet Bobby Holden for his review leadership. Col Ellert commended instructors Davidson and Morgan and endorsed ROTC course quality.

Annual Mary Washington Concert Opens University of Richmond Band Program

University of Richmond Band under Mark Troxell opened its spring season with the Mary Washington concert. The event, a longtime campus highlight, included a picnic and dance afterward featuring Mary Washington’s Band. The program ranged from Band of America March to Capricious Aloysius and Disc Jockey with a rhumba. The annual campus concert is set for May 10 at the Greek theatre.

Mock Convention Sponsored by IRC at University of Richmond

The International Relations Club hosts a mock Democratic and Republican convention on Monday night at 7 30 in the Student Activities Building. Students from Mary Washington Randolph Macon Westhampton and Richmond Colleges speak for candidates then vote by secret ballot to select party representatives and simulate the presidential election.
