Hobbyist Tony Slothauber built a rugged miniature auto for his children Dwayne and Mary Jean. He started two years ago intending a pedal car but added a three quarters HP motor to assist movement, using parts from an old lawn mower and a bench grinder in the construction.
Kindergarten through high school sections describe Halloween costumes and party activities. Students like Mary Jean Engelsman and Sharon win best and prettiest costumes, with perfect spelling honored. Joel returns to class after surgery, and Darlene and Myron earn pumpkin and spelling awards.
Lawrence Feyerabend proprietor of the Sheldon Greenhouse announces an open house to celebrate National Flower Week. Feyerabend is known in the area for distinctive floral arrangements and is sought after by clubs as a speaker and demonstrator in exotic floral design.
Northwestern Bell announces changes effective November 1. Station to station rates for many long distance calls remain unchanged while most distances see a 5 cent rise. Person to person calls incur 5 to 30 cent increases. Local coin box and public phone rates rise to 10 cents in Iowa and other exchanges.
Four Boyden youths Delmar Slykhuis David Jacobsma Raymond Rohlfs and Wm Rosenboom will report to the Orange City courthouse at 6:00 am on Wednesday November 18 for induction into the armed forces all volunteers.
Philip Van Gorp appeared in Mayor Gerrit Slothauber's court and was fined five dollars for neglecting to stop at a stop sign. The charge was processed in the mayor's court on the specified date.
A Reporter poll finds most Boyden businesses to close next Wednesday for Armistice Day with several outlets staying open only until noon or 11 am. Open till noon are Kools Farmers Co op Produce J & J Grocery Standard Station & Cafe. Open till 11 am are Smit & Son Tony's General Mosse Farmers Wholesale Supplies.
The Sheridan Homemakers will meet Friday November 6 at 1 30 p m at Mrs Ray Donkersloot's home. The program topic is window treatment with Thanksgiving suggestions as the roll call.
A group of six teen men helped Mrs. Hendrine Wielinga on her farm southwest of Boyden last Friday afternoon. They used plows and tractors and turned over about 50 acres by 5 PM, aiding the widow managing the farm since December when her son James joined the service. An aerial photo in the issue shows the full crew and operation.
Gerald Vande Brake, ill during corn picking, received a Good Neighbor Act help Monday as neighbors brought four pickers a shelter and gear to finish the harvest. The group included Bill Vreeman Art Uittenbogaard Ed Uittenbogaard Ben Holtrop Neil Vandranger Abe De Groot Jim Ver Bruggen truckers Phil Van Gorp Connie Brunsting and sheller John Klein The recipient could watch but cannot yet use his right arm much.
The 1953 pheasant season starts November 11 with a 250000 gun salute at noon. It runs through December 5 in long zone counties and November 11 to 22 in short zones with daily hours 12 noon to 4 30 pm. Daily bag limit is three cock birds. BAKE SALE The Girls League of the First Reformed Church will hold a bake sale at Tony's store on Saturday November 7 at 2:00 pm.
The Home Mission Circle of the First Reformed Church of Boyden sponsors a hymn sing in the church basement on Sunday November 8 at 8:00 p.m. Special musical numbers and a chalk painting prize will be part of the program. Organist Miss Phyliss Steunenberg and pianist Rev. Henri Steunenberg perform. Public invited.
The Dorcas Society of St. John Lutheran Church of Boyden will sponsor a chicken dinner in the rural school auditorium on Friday evening November 13. Tickets cost $1 for adults and 50 cents for children. Serving begins at 5:30 PM. all are invited.
The State Conservation Commission reminds trappers that the season for raccoon, skunk, badger, opossum, muskrat, mink and beaver starts at noon November 10. Raccoon, skunk, badger and opossum run until midnight December 9 with a special 30 day muskrat and mink season from November 10 to December 19 on Mississippi limits to the Minnesota line near the Milwaukee railroad tracks east of River north of Muscatine City.
