National Safety Awards Honor Boyden Rural Carriers

The Boyden rural carriers were honored for long accident free driving. William Kwikkel received a Safe Driver Award for 27 consecutive years and has driven about 350000 miles since 1920. Jake Vander Heiden earned an award for one year of accident free driving after replacing a deceased carrier. The Sioux City district reported 100 percent participation in the National Safety Council program across 232 offices, highlighting cooperative safety efforts within the Post Office Department.

Rochester Mayo Clinic visit and Sioux City hospital progress

Mr. John Struyk from Rochester Minnesota returned home last week after a check-up and x rays at the Mayo Clinic. Mr. Henry Bosman remains a patient at St. Josephs hospital in Sioux City and shows daily improvement.

Frank Elliott to be ordained as minister at Ottumwa

Frank Elliott, son-in-law of Mr and Mrs Leonard Rensink, will graduate from the Theological Seminary of the University of Dubuque on June 3. That evening he will be ordained into the Presbyterian ministry at Wilson Chapel in Ottumwa. Mrs Elliott is Anona Rensink of Boyden. The Elliott family has two daughters.

Morning Worship and Church Events at Boyden First Reformed

The Boyden First Reformed Church schedules morning worship at 9 30 a m Sunday School at 11 a m and evening services at 7 45. Events include a Mother-Daughter Tea, Home Mission Circle Bible study, and picnics. Infant baptism planned for June 2 with various church meetings in early June.

The United Presbyterian Church held 9 45 Sunday School and 11 00 Morning Worship with 7 30 Evening Praise. Youth Fellowship met Wednesday evening with Arlene Harman in charge and Beverly Doorenbos leading the study. Darlene Doorenbos played piano. Ruth Horn, a Tarkio College graduate, will work in religious education at Newton Town this summer. Lester Haspels will serve as student pastor at Pigeon Creek U P Church Eighty four Pennsylvania this summer, a former charge of his brother Charles. Vacation Bible School runs June 15 to June 14 for ages 4 through 8th grade.

Daily Vacation Bible School Begins June 3 at Two Churches

The Daily Vacation Bible School starts Monday June 3 at 9:00 AM and runs two weeks. A program will close the session at the Presbyterian church Friday evening June 14. Children aged 4 through entering eighth grade are invited, with classes split by age at United Presbyterian and First Reformed churches.

500 Club Hosts Mr and Mrs Logan Vanden Brink Dinner

The 500 Club gathered at the Vanden Brinks home Friday at 7:00 pm with Mrs Milton Mackie and Mrs Dale Moen assisting. Members played 500. Kenneth Meyn won the men's high prize, Mrs Norman Bell the women's high prize, and Mr and Mrs Kenneth Meyn the high couple score.

The American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 272 met at the Legion Hall with 17 members. Mrs. Milton Mackie led the meeting and the group sang the National Anthem. Poppy chairwoman Mrs. Baartman distributed pop pies for sale on Saturday May 25. Mrs. Logan Vanden Brink organized the program featuring Marion Kempers of Hull demonstrating cake decorating. A closing lunch was served by Mrs. Dale Moen Mrs. Doyle Tutte and Mrs. Henry Van Velzen.

Pupils in Lower Grades Enjoy Train Ride from Boyden

Pupils from kindergarten through third grade at Boyden, except those home with measles, rode the Milwaukee train to Rock Valley with teachers Mrs. Ernest Olson, Mrs. Gerrit Hulstein, and Mrs. Mabel Jenison. They ate sack lunches in Rock Valley Park, played, and returned by school buses, tired but happy.

Two Hurt In Boyden Area Highway Collision

On Friday at 5 30 p m two people sustained minor injuries in a two car crash east of Boyden on Highway 18 Mrs Goldie Groot 72 of Hull and Johanna Pap 18 of Doon were riding as passengers in different vehicles driven by Jacob Groot and Herman Van Donge 20 of Sioux Center respectively The Van Donge car rear ended the Groot car both were heavily damaged Van Donge received a ticket for failing to keep his vehicle under control

Starkweather to Receive Degree at Morningside Commencement

Jerry Starkweather of Boyden will be among 82 Morningside College seniors earning a Bachelor of Arts at final commencement exercises Monday at 10:00 a.m. in Allen Gymnasium Sioux City. Dr Harold F Carr president of Iliff School of Theology in Denver will deliver the address on "Qualified to Learn." Twenty two year teaching certificates will also be awarded.
