A farewell honor marked Miss Mattie Peelen’s 33 years at Boyden Public School as she leaves for Orange City Public Grade School next fall. Community members presented a watch. a “This is Your Life” stage set celebrated her career with family, former colleagues, and students.
A 1923 farewell poem honors Miss Mattie Peelen a longtime Boyden schoolteacher. It notes her tall presence steady work and two year terms shaping students and town, praising her quiet faithfulness and impact as she departs with gratitude from anonymous authors.
Memorial services will be held in Boyden on Thursday May 30 with gatherings at 9 15 a m at St John Lutheran Cemetery and at 10 a m at Boyden cemetery Rev James S Boogerd of Matlock will give the address at the 10 a m service All Legionnaires and Auxiliary members urged to attend
Paula Zimmer valedictorian at Boyden High School receives the Annual Readers Digest Association Award for outstanding school work and leadership potential. She earns a one year honorary subscription and an engraved certificate, recognizing past accomplishments and future achievement.
At the May 20 awards assembly in the Boyden High School gym, Paula Zimmer earned Valedictorian honors though not a full four years at Boyden. Dennis Fuhr was named Salutatorian. LeRoy Bomgaars won the Citizenship awards from both the faculty and the Iowa Bar Association. Ruth Steunenberg received the Readers Digest Award for scholastic achievement and community and church involvement.
After the Bac calaureate services Mr and Mrs Henry L Moret and Mrs Mabel Jenison entertained Sunday evening at the Moret home honoring Miss Mattie Peelen and Mrs Bertha Dykstra who will leave the faculty staff at term’s end. Attending were Supt and Mrs Earl Ed Hall Principal and Mrs Dale Moen Mr and Mrs Milton Mackie Miss Mattie Peelen Mr and Mrs Marion Reisinger Mr and Mrs Ernest Olson Mr and Mrs H M Dykstra and Mr and Mrs Gerrit Hulstein. Unable to attend were Mr and Mrs Marion Sargeant.
Mr. and Mrs. George Horn left Monday to attend graduation exercises at Tarkio College in Tarkio Missouri. Their daughter Ruth Horn is a member of the graduating class and she'll return home with them.
Mrs. Milton Mackie of the Warr Monster Unit American Legion Auxiliary announces Poppy Day on May 25. Crepe paper poppies replica of World War I flowers will be worn to honor veterans. disabled veterans in hospitals and workrooms made over twenty million this year.
The Boyden post office will overhaul holiday operations to cut costs. Starting May 30 and on all holidays thereafter, window service is eliminated. An employee will handle mail from 10:00 am to noon, distributing newspapers and train mail, with all mail for the afternoon train due before noon for dispatch. Patrons may collect mail only from 10:00 am to noon. the door will stay locked otherwise.
Earl K. Warne of Atlantic Iowa will receive a Doctorate in Educational Psychology and Guidance on May 28 at Colorado State College in Greeley Colorado. He will join Eastern Montana College of Education as psychology instructor counselor and training chief next fall.
Final exercises for local seniors and a polio clinic are planned. Hull notes a second polio clinic Friday May 24 with bus transport at 9:00 am for ages from pre school to 20. Boyden graduation exercises Thursday May 23 at 8:00 pm at the Boyden Public School Auditorium feature Rev C Muyskens as speaker and include processional invocations salutatory address music and diplomas.
Miss Marilynn Kammlade daughter of Mr and Mrs E C Kammlade will graduate as a registered medical technician on Sunday afternoon May 26. Graduation will be held at Heelen High School Sioux City Iowa following twelve months of training at St Josephs School of Medical Technology. She attended Westmar College as a science major for two years and is a Boyden High School Class of 54 graduate. Friends and relatives are invited to attend.
St Johns Lutheran School north of town hosts its annual picnic for pupils parents and friends on Friday May 24 with a noon picnic dinner at Sheldon Park.
The Boyden Public School will hold its annual picnic on Wednesday May 29 starting at 11 a.m. in the school gym for all pupils parents and friends of the Boyden community. A picnic dinner will be served at noon.
A 5:00 p.m. Memorial Day Matinee of SEVEN WONDERS OF THE WORLD at Century Cinerama Theatre in Minneapolis is added to the regular 2:00 and 8:30 p.m. shows with holiday pricing. The Lowell Thomas production is in its 42nd Minneapolis week, marking a long Cinerama run in Minnesota.
The Vanden Brink bowling team enjoyed a Tuesday dinner at the Normandy in Sioux City followed by bowling. Attendees included Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Kooiker, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Meyn, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Rosenboom, and Mr. and Mrs. Ray Rohlfs.
Mr and Mrs Jim Kool receive invitation to All-College Honors Convocation at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls on May 22. Joyc e Kool daughter of Jim Kool is honored for scholastic achievements and will teach elementary grades at Sanborn Public School next term living with her grandmother Mrs Frank Conner in Sanborn.
The Girls' League for Service of the First Reformed Church sponsors a Mother-Daughter Tea on Monday evening May 27 at 8 oclock in the church parlors. Guest speaker Mrs D Vander Haar of Sheldon and special music. Tickets free from Jean Slothouber Georgiana Brinks or Ruth Meendering. Lunch by Girls League members after a song service and social hour.
Harold Kuyper begins new duties as driver salesman for Standard Oil Company on Monday, succeeding W R Adkins promoted to Standard Agent after the death of Andrew Vander Wiel of Sheldon. Kuyper, a former Farmers Co op Elevator employee, will remain in Boyden with his family.
Mrs Leonard Kleyne returns home from Shel don hospital after improving from illness. Mrs Henry Broesder underwent surgery in Sheldon hospital and is recovering at home. Mrs John Humme of Hull is ill with a heart ailment and had light attacks this week. Mr Henry Bosman remains hospitalized at St Josephs Sioux City but shows improvement and will stay for several days for specialized treatment. Art Vander Veen of Sioux Falls is a patient at Sioux Valley hospital with visits from Mr and Mrs John Sitter.
