Mrs J Van Houte celebrated her seventy eighth birthday last Friday May 9. Attending were Mr and Mrs Van Houte of Seattle Washington Mr and Mrs Henry Rensink and family Mr and Mrs Henry Van Houte and family and Mayme Van Houle of Boyden.
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Kooy returned Thursday from Des Moines where they attended the Independent Grocers convention in progress. They also attended a special session authorizing a 325000 building to house Briardale Stores Inc offices and warehouse facilities. Over 200 independent grocers are members of the organization.
Census supervisor Mr. M. E. DeWellf reports Boyden's population reached 446 in the 1930 U S census, up from 419 on January 1, 1920, a notable gain while many towns decline.
The pupils of St John’s Parochial School present an interesting program Friday evening May 23 beginning at eight o'clock. A cordial invitation is extended to everybody. A small admission charge will be made.
Station W M B I of the Moody Bible Institute will broadcast a sacred program by the pupils of Ben DeJong on Saturday May 17 at 1030 in the evening. Prof DeJong formerly taught at the Boyden Christian school and now teaches in a large parochial school in Chicago.
Mr Brooks of the Risk Tire Company will be at the Van Diepen garage all day Monday May 19 to demonstrate the new risk tire just placed in the market. The Saturday event has been postponed and readers are urged to read the Van Diepen garage advertisement for full details.
In the district scholastic meet held Tuesday, Milford won Class B with 173.82 points. Ast on 145, George 122.58, Superior 103.32, Boyden 92.07, Archer 4.47, Royal 82.65, Hospers 41.57 followed in order as Class B participants. Schools were split by enrollment, with Class A for larger high schools and Class B for smaller ones.
Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Notting return from Denny Colorado with Miss Wilhelmina Notting who has been ill in a hospital there for almost a year. Miss Notting plans to resume work in Chicago where her position was kept open. Jerry reports a trouble free trip and few shifts while in Iowa.
The Boyden Public Schools keep most staff intact with Miss Freda Voss leaving her Latin English and Dramatics post. Miss Burger of Ona wa replaces Miss De Valois in primary grades and Mr John Timmer becomes head of the School of Christian Instruction replacing Mr Van Scholten. Iliss Kooiman and Miss Grooters continue with their grade teams.
The Kooiman store is undergoing interior remodeling based on an expert blueprint. DeJong Construction handles much of the work as departments shift locations including the shoe department to the southwest corner and the grocery area moving to the west side. The men’s furnishings department will occupy the front west area and many changes aim to elevate it to a full department store.
Banks in Boyden will close Monday May 19 due to the Bankers convention at Holstein. Reserved seats for the Senior Class play are available at Hilton Bros. drug store on Monday and Tuesday.
