Skimmilk and Buttermilk Feed Value for Pigs
Hog producers with access to raw milk by products can use liquid skimmilk buttermilk and whey as valuable hog feeds. A rough rule values 100 pounds of skim or buttermilk at about half the price of one bushel of corn. one quart of undiluted milk products balances one pound of corn. As pigs grow, they drink more milk products, reducing the need for additional protein supplements. Whey also offers high protein but the passage ends mid thought.
Whey feeding limits for growing pigs under 150 pounds
Whey is a lower protein feed and insufficient alone for pigs under 150 pounds. It is worth only about one sixth to one fifth the price of corn per bushel and should be balanced with extra protein fed free choice. Occasional digestive upsets may occur with large whey quantities but are typically not lasting. Salt in whey is rare today due to curd salting.
