Woman's Citizenship Club Plans Next Year

The Wo man’s Citizenship Club executive board met Thursday at Mrs Ora Van Diepen’s home to map programs for the coming year. Members present were Mrs Ed Blumeyer Mrs Paul Zimmer Mrs John Vermeer Mrs Robert Dethmers and Mrs Glen Vande Garde. The last meeting of the year will be Friday May 3 at 8:00 pm at the Dethmers home. Visitors or potential members are welcome.

Freeport Couple Sets June 8 Wedding Date

Miss Mary Herendeen and Milton Scholten of Freeport Illinois have chosen Saturday June 8 for their wedding. Scholten is son of Mr and Mrs Gerhard Scholten of Boyden. Herendeen works as secretary and script writer at a Freeport TV station. Scholten teaches vocal music at Freeport High School and assists elementary grade music.

Sheridan Sunshiners 4-H Club Met Monday Evening

The Sheridan Sunshiners 4-H Club met at Nelva Moret’s home with 14 members, five visitors and two leaders. A series of demonstrations and talks followed, with club officers and reports presented. Rally Day May 31 at Sioux Center Town Hall announced. two new members welcomed.

Plan Summer Swimming Program for Boyden

Mrs. Roger Klay of Hull and Mrs. Norman Bell joined Sioux County Red Cross leaders at Alton to organize a summer swimming program for Boyden youngsters. About 58 pupils from Boyden grades expressed interest. Plans aim to finish a swimming pool north of town soon, but completion timing remains uncertain. more details will appear in the Boyden Reporter.

Lois Doorenbos Shoots 212 In Women’s League

Lois Doorenbos rolled a 212 game and 502 series in the late shift of the Women’s League last Thursday. The scores were season highs and likely the Legion Bowl’s best by a woman since opening. Lois, daughter of Mr and Mrs Lawrence Doorenbos, bowls for the Farmers Savings Bank team.

Fire at Fred Reimers Farm Kept Under Control

Boyden fire department responded to a Saturday morning chimney fire at the Fred Reimers farm home. Extinguisher bombs were used down the chimney and the blaze was soon under control with no damage to the house reported by Mr. Reimers.

A miscellaneous shower was given at the Roy Schafer home Thursday evening honoring Mrs. Earl Horn, a recent bride. Hostesses were Mrs. Joe Horn and Mrs. Roy Schafer. Boyden Legion Sends Junior to Hawkeye Boys State

The Boyden American Legion selected Le land Doorenbos a Boyden High School junior to attend the Iowa American Legion Boys State at Camp Dodge Des Moines from June 2 to June 8. About 720 Iowa youths will join music athletics and government activities and elect officials. Expenses for the week are paid by the Boyden post.

A Wednesday meeting at the Legion Building crowned awards and elected new officers for next year. Western League honors went to Co op Oil and top prizes were awarded to Arie Struyk and Vernon Van Ommeren for notable scoring feats. New Train Schedule Affects Boyden Post Office Mail

A new passenger train timetable starts Monday April 29 affecting mail dispatch from the Boyden Post Office. The eastbound train arrives 11 00 a m and westbound at 5 00 p m with the mail messenger needing mail by 10 30 a m and 4 30 p m. Window hours are 8 30 to 12 30 and 1 00 to 5 30 Monday through Friday and 8 30 to 12 30 Saturday with limited daily open time remaining.

Howard Laker in National Bowling Tourney at Fort Worth

Dwight Vander Haar of Howard Lake Minnesota formerly Jef Boyden bowled in a national tournament in Fort Worth Texas last week. He says the biggest thrill was bowling on alleys beside Don Carter and Steve Nagy who have appeared on Championship Bowling on national TV. Mrs Vander Haar and family stayed with relatives during Dwight’s Texas trip.

Blaze destroys First Presbyterian Church in Penn Yan

A fire gutted the First Presbyterian church in Penn Yan New York on Wednesday morning April 17 after being discovered at 8 00 am. The loss is estimated above half a million dollars with seven fire departments assisting in battle. The church, 78 years old, had a recent addition completed. Rev Oscar Jelsma served as pastor and Mrs Jelsma formerly Eunice Scholten of Boyden was connected to the congregation.

Sioux County Extension Service announces new hours Monday through Friday from 8 to 12 and 1 to 5. The office will be closed on Saturdays. As before, the Extension Home Economist and Extension Director aim to be in the office Mondays to assist callers.

Fire destroys home in Matlock caused by defective chimney

Matlock volunteers battled a Sunday blaze at Mrs King's home after 12 noon. Smoke seeped through cracks as firefighters traced a chimney fault, cutting holes in roof and walls to reach the fire, causing extensive damage to the dwelling.
