Granville edged Boyden 2 to 1 in extra innings last Friday. Scholten struck out 12 for Boyden and Schuver fanned 14 for Granville as a pitchers duel produced few hits. Granville scored the decisive run after a miscue to end the game. Boyden showed hitting and fielding weaknesses with four errors.

New 3¢ Stamp Honors Chaplains in WWI Tragedy

Boyden Leads Softball Start With Two Wins This Year
The town of Boyden has opened the softball season strong with two wins, including a victory over Middleburg and a later win against Orange City. A community barn-raising party at Joe Horn’s farm attracted 140 guests last Friday night to honor helpers who rebuilt after a fire, with a night of entertainment in the new barn. Local residents attended visits and gatherings in nearby homes, including Sheldon, Hull, and Orange City, with several families stopping by for social calls and meals.

Northwestern Bell Announces Long-Distance Rate Increases
Northwestern Bell Telephone Company says long distance rates within Iowa will rise to cover wage, equipment, and plant cost increases. New rates take effect June 21, 1948, with some calls unchanged, many up by 5 to 10 cents, some 15 to 20 cents for certain distances, and a uniform three minute initial period across all call classes. Manager R F Macheak notes substantial postwar investments and revised pricing to keep state earnings at a reasonable level.

Mr and Mrs Virgil Smit have purchased the Rob Moret home once occupied by Supt and Mrs Norgaard and family not expected to move back to Oyden until around July 1. Mr Smit, formerly principal at Boyden School, will affiliate with Farmers Coop Assn and will run a new propane gas station the association plans to operate.

Moermonds Celebrate 58th Wedding Anniversary and 82nd Birthday

Boyden Girl In Accident
Mary Ann Casemier daughter of Mr and Mrs John Casemier narrowly escaped serious injuries when the motorcycle she rode with owner Gerrit Lode overturned on Highway 18 two miles east of Boyden. Both were thrown from the bike with Mary Ann suffering severe pavement burns and bruises and Lode receiving bruises. She was taken to Hull Hospital for treatment.

4H Club Spring Picnic and Probate Notice
4H club members and visitors enjoyed a May 27 picnic with a dedication to Rally Day plans and a pot luck supper. A probate hearing is set for June 28 1948 in Orange City to determine the will of John Warntjes Jr deceased, with witnesses required to show cause why the will should not be admitted to probate.

Funeral Services For Koole Boys Saturday
Funeral services for Raymond Koole and his cousin Marvin will be held Saturday June 12 at the American Reformed Church in Hull. The Koole brothers were killed in Africa during World War II and their bodies arrived in Hull Wednesday. Military Honors will be accorded at Hope Cemetery with a firing squad provided by Company I and Hull American Legion.
