The Colorado potato beetle is a major threat to potatoes and vegetables. It alternates life stages from orange eggs to voracious larvae and defoliating adults, with outbreaks in June to August. Control options include dusting or spraying with paris green, calcium arsenate, or cryolite, plus hand picking and crushing egg masses.
With the first warm spell insects emerge to attack crops. The cabbage green worm and lice threaten cabbage while Colorado beetles and flea beetles threaten potatoes. Rotenone dusting at 0.75 percent should be applied as butterflies appear, then ten days apart.
The sugar beet is an important cash crop, says University of Wisconsin, proven over years of production. It blends with dairy farming, utilizes farm manure, and leaves soil loose and friable. Beets resist late frosts, top feed is valuable for cattle and sheep, and tops can be pastured or stored as silage.
The guide recommends an evergreen windbreak set about 150 feet from protected buildings. A single row provides some protection, two rows are better, and three rows offer the most. Space trees roughly 18 feet apart to maximize shelter from prevailing winds.
Fred Vanderham, president of the County Farm Bureau, called Sioux County’s 1946 primary voting shameful with only 18.1 percent turnout. He warned that low participation jeopardizes democracy, citing 2000 county soldiers who defended freedom, and urged voters to study candidates and vote on June 7 to protect democratic rights.

Winners announced in the Art and Poetry contests associated with the Sioux County Federated Woman's Club Convention. Awardees include Marian Vagts Janice Smit Leona Van Maanen Marjean Vande Hoef Georgian Brink Marilyn Moret Mary Dale Van den Berg Muriel Den Herder Esther De Wilde Clarence Jacobsma with adult entries from Northwestern College.
An industry estimate shows that only 80 to 85 percent of a truckload of fresh fruit and vegetables from the farm reaches consumers, with the remainder spoiling before reaching kitchens.

Neighbors John Klein Paul Schreuder Joe Mouw and Rev Schortinghuis joined a surprise group.
The Northwestern Junior College and Academy in Orange City granted girls athletic awards. Rita Van Steenwyk led with 212 points and earned an academy athletic letter. Dorothy Westra Anona Rensink and Gertrude Bosman joined the Womens Athletic Association. Joan De Leeuw qualified for the Academy Girl’s emblem.
Miss Josephine Boender Hos tpers student at Northwestern Junior College and Academy Orange City recently earned the Gregg Superior Certificate of Attainment. The first Northwestern recipient, the award honors ten business field awards including typewriting shorthand transcription and penmanship. Commercial instructor Miss Marcia Hubers guides the program.
