Family reunions attract wide Iowa attendance on July Fourth

The Scholten family gathered at the Art Thmef home in Ashton with attendees from Los Angeles Gowrie Ames Hespers Des Moines Avoca Sheldon Storm Lake Ashton Orange City Boyden Sioux Center Slayton Minn and Worthington Minn. Other reunions included the Ver Hoef Langstraat and Korthals families with numerous relatives from Newkirk Matlock Orange City Sheldon and Boyden.

Local Junior Legion Pitcher Receives Honor

Milton Scholten, pitcher for the local Legion team, earned statewide recognition as a top pitcher for his age. Photos ran in the Des Moines Register and the Sioux City Journal this week, with sports writers noting he has overcome a severe handicap after losing one arm in an auto accident at age four.

Births Mr and Mrs Ariel Grooters Blessed With Daughter

Mr and Mrs Ariel Grooters welcome a daughter born Sunday July 4 at Hull Hospital. Baby Mary Ellen weighs seven pounds and is joined by one sister and two brothers. Grandparents are J Vernon Kooiker Cedar Falls and Mr and Mrs Abe Vande Gaarde. Also born July 3 a son to Mr and Mrs Vernon Kooiker. He weighs seven and a half pounds. Grandparents are Nick J Kooiker and Abe Vande Gaarde.

Draft Affects 1000 In Sioux County

Utah? No. Sioux County faces a new draft registration beginning August 16 for men aged 19 to 25. About 140,000 Iowans will register with roughly 4,000 to 5,000 drafted in the first year and local boards expected to number about 100.

Bosman Family In Wreck Near Postville

Mr and Mrs Henry Bosman their son in law Mr Henry Dutch Moret and daughter suffered bruises in a Wednesday collision with a poultry truck near Postville. The Bosman car struck a pole after sideswiping the truck with Mrs Bosman receiving a broken rib and the vehicle left badly damaged.

Clarence Talsma from Haarlem Netherlands starts work at Farmers Savings Bank this week. He has banking experience in Amsterdam and with the Dutch State in The Hague serving war victims. He is married with one child Betty and plans to live in Boyden when housing becomes available. A local correction notes a prior misattribution of news.

Boyden Observes Fourth At Ball Park Fireworks Show

A large crowd gathered at Boyden ball park Monday night to watch a fireworks display organized by private families led by Bill Humme Pete Mor et and Amos Roetman. Rockets roman candles and other devices lit the sky as cars lined the roads and bleachers filled.

State Fair to Stage Moon Themed Revue for 90th Anniversary

The Iowa State Fair announces a three hour evening program headlined by State Fair Revue of 1948 with 250 performers including Broadway talent. The finale features a girl named Aida performing acrobatics on a moon suspended 75 feet above the stage. Four ensemble numbers, new talent, and circus acts plus nightly fireworks cap the show.

The District Court of Sioux County Iowa has appointed Walter Warntjes as executor of the John Warntjes Sr estate. Boyden Faces Marcus in Cherokee Invitational Debut

Thirteen teams enter the Cherokee Invitational starting next week. Boyden draws Marcus for Monday July 12 at 9:00 PM. The winner advances to meet the Lemars versus Rembrandt victor on Thursday July 15 at 7:00 PM as the long tournament runs to Tuesday July 20.

Miss Spykerman caller in Boyden as teams suffer losses

Miss Alice Spykerman of Holland Michigan visited Boyden on Thursday. Her father, once a local watchmaker, ran a shop where the Reporter Office now sits. Boyden ball squads dropped two games last week, 3–0 to Maurice in Sioux Center and 8–2 to Hospers at home. Midget Baseball beat Hospers 8–1 with Jerry Starkweather allowing two hits. Also noted is a patented War Cream for Face claimed to shield skin from extreme heat and cold, originally for shipboard flash burns.

Cover Crops Cut Soil Loss and Boost Corn Yields

Iowa State researchers report four benefits from sowing cover crops with corn. They protect soil from August to May, add organic matter and nitrogen, and may raise following year corn yields. A seed plan uses endgate broadcast seeding with cultivator weeders.

Legumes like sweet clover and alfalfa boost soil nitrogen and organic matter when well fed. In Newton Illinois field tests sweet clover on limed, phosphate and potash enriched soil yielded 63 pounds more nitrogen and more organic matter per acre than lime only. Their deep tap roots improve soil tilth by reducing compaction and bringing nutrients deeper for subsequent crops.
