An Old Rule Helps Compute Dairying Profit

County Extension Director J E Ellis shares a rule of thumb to gauge dairy profits for the year. He suggests adding the price received for 3% butterfat to the price of 100 pounds of hay, then comparing this total to the cost of 100 pounds of the grain mix. If the combined butterfat and hay price at least equals grain cost, dairying shows profit.
