12th Annual Appreciation Day Set in Hull on Aug 25

Plans are complete for Hulls 12th Annual Appreciation Day to be held Thursday August 25 1960 Stores will close at 11:00 am to allow shoppers to prepare for the day Events include pony and bicycle races sports for children a variety program at 8:00 pm and horse races at Ball Park with prizes totaling 200 There will be free ride tickets and concessions sponsored by the American Legion with lunches served in the Community Memorial Building basement Admission afternoon events is 50 cents and 25 cents Bleachers will be added for seating A prize drawing totaling 125 takes place at 10:00 pm Complete day program is advertised elsewhere in the issue

Hull Legion Auxiliary Held Meeting August 11

The American Legion Auxiliary Wegman Keele Unit No. 380 held its annual Rehabilitation meeting with 19 members present. They made scrap books, favors, and gauze folds, producing 12 scrap books, 80 favors, 135 bibs, and 48 pot-holders while discussing the Appreciation Day lunch stand and a two pie donation requirement. A pot-luck lunch followed.

Minimum Corn Support Set for Sioux County at 0.98

John B. Draager announced Sioux County will support 1960 crop corn at a minimum 0.98 per bushel. The rate ties to a national average 1.06 and applies to loans and purchase agreements from harvest through May 31 1961, maturing July 31 1961, with eligibility limited to No 3 grade or better (No 4 by test weight) and proper moisture and storage. Details available at the county ASC office.

Registration for Hull Appreciation Day Horse Races

Hull plans its annual Appreciation Day on August 25 featuring a day of horse racing. Entries must be registered at Tensen Implement by August 20. Prizes total 200 dollars funded by the Hull Business and Professional Men.

Sandy Takes Third for Queen at Sioux County Youth Fair

Lorna Kooi, 18, daughter of Earl and Mrs Kooi of Ireton, was crowned queen by county votes at the Sioux County Youth Fair. She won with 448 votes, beating runner-up Karen Boone by 19 and third-place Sandy Van Veldhuizen by 21. Other candidates included Ardean Franken, Anna Mae Huisman, Sharon Mouw, Lois Oostra, Mary Popma, and Sandy Van Veldhuizen with votes listed.

The Hull Christian Grammar School plans to open Wednesday August 31 with opening devotional exercises at the Christian Reformed Church. Officials hope new classroom space under construction will be completed by then for movable equipment and classes in the expanded area.

Van's Implement and Service of Hull sponsors a plowing demonstration today from 2 p.m. until dark. It will be held one mile east and 1 percent miles south of the Lakewood bridge or one mile west and 914 miles north of Hull, with the full line of Massey-Ferguson tractors demonstrated.

Young Northwest Town Group Completes Salt Lake Mission Workshop

Miss Sharon Harthoorn and Mr. Arthur Van Wyhe return from Salt Lake City where ten Northwest Town youths joined a five week Summer Workshop in Missions sponsored by the Hawkeye League. Under Rev. N Vogelzang the group canvassed neighborhoods, distributed tracts, visited convalescent homes, jails, and hospitals, and conducted Vacation Bible School.

Western Christian High and Boyden Hull Register This Fall

Registration plans for Western Christian High School Hull and Boyden Hull Community School are outlined with freshmen and sophomores registering September 1 and juniors and seniors September 2. Regular classes start September 6. Transportation schedules and rent fees are detailed for rural and town students and buses, with staff lists and kindergarten supply notes included.

Henry P Vis Injured In Two Car Country Crash

Henry P Vis of Hull was seriously injured in a two car crash at a country road intersection three miles south of Hull Tuesday afternoon. Mrs Marvin Prins drove an eastbound 1956 Ford, while Vis drove a 1954 Dodge northbound. The Ford struck the Dodge on the left side and both vehicles ended in the ditch at the northeast corner of the intersection.

Hoeven urges CRP extension before Congress adjourns

Iowa congressman Charles Hoeven says Congress must extend and expand the Conservation Reserve Program before adjournment to avoid ending December 31 1960. He notes party promises in 1960 platforms support land retirement and urges action amid farm surpluses and a bumper crop. Hoeven sponsors legislation to extend the program and allow rental payments to retiring farmers.
