Iowa poultrymen, leading the nation in egg production, back National Egg Day set for May 1. Secretary M. G. Thornburg says the day aims to spotlight egg value in diet and health, with emphasis on grading eggs by candling to improve returns for producers, dealers, and consumers.

Egg Candling Starts May 1st for Dealers

The Iowa Department of Agriculture states that starting May 1 the candling rule applies to all eggs purchased by dealers. It notes March and April require no candling as most eggs sold then are first class, while May sees more eggs not up to standard. The aim is to protect sellers of good eggs and prevent price penalties on first class producers.

Thieves Strike Local Stores in Early Morning Robberies

A thief or group broke into Boyden Hardware Store and the Butcher Shop, stealing change from registers. The Meat Market yielded about $880, while the Hardware Store netted $10 to $14. An attempted break in at Van Diepen Garage failed. Entry used a small bar. investigators suspect amateur wrenching after the nightwatch left.

The Sheridan Township Farm Bureau Auxiliary held meetings in April with reports from delegates who attended a short course at Anes. Leaders listed include Mrs. T J Stientjes and others. attendance was light but reports praised. A second meeting featured the first in a series of five lessons on children’s clothing hosted by Lois Munn with noted attendees and substitutes.
