Coalfields Expressway design contracts awarded

Three preliminary design contracts for the Coalfields Expressway were awarded by Richard Browning, with work spanning Wyoming and McDowell counties. The project, a 70 mile four lane route from Beckley to Grundy, Va, includes segments near Indian Ridge and U.S. Route 52 and is funded by a $22.7 million federal allocation.

Playground Contaminated by Gas Odor at Preschool

Officials traced a natural gas smell near a Putnam County preschool. The Multicap Headstart playground was closed this school year after several children fell ill from fumes. Two nearby companies Mountaineer Gas and Union Oil and Natural Gas Co operate stations storing odorant additive. Parents express concern over gas odors and safety.
