Pentagon Faces Strain In Expanding Veterans Burial Honors
Officials acknowledge the duty to honor veterans but warn full rites for all deaths may overwhelm the system. With 46 000 deaths monthly this year rising 23 percent since 1989 and a shrinking active force, bills by Murray and Lane seek a minimum five person honor guard and bugler without new funding. Veterans groups support easing burdens while stressing that not every veteran seeks full honors and calls for alternative personnel sources and congressional funding.
