Boarding House Fire Destroys Hodges Complex Near College

Fire swept the J. D. Hodges boarding houses on West Hickory Street destroying the East Annex the Main building and the West Annex and threatening President Bruce home. Losses estimated over 15000 with 12000 insured. Students had left for holidays many contents saved despite damage. Fire started in East Annex likely from a defective flue and spread rapidly through the three structures before containment.

Refugee Federal troops report that about 250 Federal irregulars garrisoning Ascension were nearly wiped out after a rebel attack on Wednesday. Only around 15 men survived besides the garrison commander. The fate of 150 regulars at Guzman is unknown as officials claim a regular battalion moves from the west to trap the rebel force.

In Sherman on December 23 a surprise Christmas visit by Fitch Hickman to his mother Mrs. A H Hickman triggered a nervous collapse and she died five hours later. Hickman had brought his young daughter from Montana where a wife and another child were lost in a ranch fire three months earlier.

Menin Belgium reports thirteen dead and about fifty injured after a fire at a Barraques cinema last night as patrons fled for safety. Victims perished in the stampede and crush amid the panic.
