President says the tariff bill earns all approvals and promises benefit to consumers. Interview notes the measure will not injure healthy business and should pass promptly.
President Wilson told reporters that the new tariff bill has wide country approval and will not disrupt healthy business. He said while living costs won’t drop immediately, consumers will feel the sugar duty reduction right away as fixed price arrangements would be impractical in a new competitive market.
The sundry civil appropriation bill, carrying 116 million dollars, was re introduced in the House on April 14. It previously faced a Taft veto over a proviso exempting farmers organizations and labor unions from prosecution with Justice Department funds.

Fines of 25 dollars were imposed on witnesses George Jones and May Bates with 200 dollars bond set for their appearance next term. The Flanary result is seen as influencing the Wimberly proceeding. Mrs Wimberly is charged with her husband’s death. The Hons Hammett case is set for Tuesday with fifty men summoned for jury, while missing witnesses hinder county attorney Wilson. Miss Mary Woods and her mother face continuance. Tom Sisson’s murder case closes the docket with a fifty-man jury venire scheduled for Wednesday.
A jury found Claude Cook guilty of second degree murder and sentenced him to 99 years in prison. The trial, delayed by defense requests for special charges including insanity, concluded after a lengthy deliberation with the court refusing all requested charges. An appeal is expected.
In Brussels and Antwerp the labor walkout shows varying impact as 230,000 to 250,000 workers join a socialist suffrage strike. Mining areas report full stoppages while Liege Charleroi Mons and other cities see widespread work disruption.
April 14 strike troubles force International Harvester twine mill in Auburn New York to close permanently and ready machinery for shipment to Germany. Strike pickets block workers from operating the mill today.
Normal wins both debates sparking jubilation among students. Celebration follows victory over San Marcos for the first time. Joy spreads from POKQ Spain to Canyon CA.
North Texas Normal students celebrated a pair of debater victories over San Marcos and Canyon Normals. The Canyon win sparked a late Saturday night buzz while hundreds waited for word. Teese and Peters received ovations on their return Monday morning as the Normal band led cheers downtown.
The North Texas Normal School defeated Southwest Texas Normal in Denton and West Texas Normal in Canyon City in unanimous victories. San Marcos supporters cheered the Denton win, the seventh annual debate with San Marcos, and Denton had failed to win in four of the prior six contests.
