Whitesville Road Project Favored by Chamber Leader

Elwood Priestley, Boone County businessman and State Republican official, endorses Whitesville Chamber of Commerce plans to improve local roads. He cites six miles of new pavement linking West Virginia Route 3 at Whitesville to State Route 78 near Van, shortening distances to Van and Madison by about 10 and 15 miles respectively. A delegation will seek action from State Road Commissioner Patrick C. Graney.

Hooten Rites Held for May Jane Hooten in Minden

Funeral services for May Jane Hooten, 79, of Minden, were set for 2 p.m. today at Oak Hill Brethren Church with Rev. Mellon Robinson officiating. Burial followed at Huse Memorial Park in Fayetteville. Body to remain at Tyree Funeral Home and be moved to the church an hour before services.

Elkins Funeral Set Tuesday in Cyclone Church

Funeral services for Mrs. Helen Elkins, 37, will be held Tuesday afternoon at the Campus Church of God in Cyclone. Burial will follow in Cook Cemetery. She died Sunday at a local hospital. Surviving are her husband Pierce Elkins, two daughters Loris and Dora, a son Charles, her parents Anthony and Susie Conway Cook, four sisters and three brothers. The body will be moved to the family home Monday afternoon.

Lane Edward Trent and son Michael from Elyria Ohio visited his mother Viola Trent. Larry Tyree and Huntington were weekend guests of his parents Frank Tyree. Jack Barley of Elyria Ohio spent weekend with his family. Mrs Bertie ONeal and Mrs Minnie Humphrey Williams returned from Richmond Virginia where they were guests of J T Humphrey. Mrs J L Cochran visited her sister Mrs Joe Burdete Hill Top. Mrs Mindy Chapman of East Kingston is a patient in Oak Hill Hospital following surgery.

Modernized Wyco Tipple Fire Roars Through Mine

Amigo Smokeless Coal Co suffered a $500000 loss as fire destroyed the modernized Wyco tipple. Four communities sent crews to fight the blaze, delaying restart plans for the mine that previously underwent upgrades and partial shutdowns. About 1,500 tons daily were produced at Wyco with 250 workers at the plant and 50 at adjacent operations affected by the fire.
