Foreign Aid Faces Floor Fight and Major Cuts
The prospect of defeating a proviso on a money bill looms as House members debate a broad aid package. Total military and development assistance to allied nations faces heavy cuts, including 38 percent on loans for economic development and a 18 percent cut to the Peace Corps. Five nations Greece, Turkey, South Korea, Viet Nam, and Nationalist China receive half the funds, with 88 percent directed to neighbors of the Communist bloc.
