A parked car bomb outside the Imperial Hotel in North Belfast killed a passerby and wounded many as IRA violence escalated. British forces detained four of five fleeing gunmen after a pursuit linked to earlier clashes.
McGovern and supporters urge Nixon to leave the White House and campaign publicly to show voters the political fight in him. Nixon stays near the White House as backers sweep the country with events in New England New Jersey and Seattle.
An Air Force communique describes Navy jets near Haiphong destroying an anti aircraft gun and igniting five fires in a transshipment area. About 50 Marines attacked the Citadel walls with grenades and armor supported by government tanks, capturing the north, south and east sections amid light casualties as shelling persisted.
Rev. George W. Watkins, a Baptist minister known for anti smoking crusades, sues Philip Morris Inc. for 500000 alleging his image appeared in Marlboro ads and on billboards. He says the publicity has exposed him to scorn and loss of esteem. The case is before U.S. District Court Judge Abraham L. Marovitz.
The West Virginia Air Pollution Control Commission will hold its first public meeting on October 26 to outline a new control program costing industry about 1 billion. The plan targets initial compliance for seven of about 100 major plants including Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel at Benwood and Follansbee, Moundsville works, Weirton Steel, Koppers at Follansbee, Beech Bottom Power, Kammer Power, Mitchell Power, and Allied Chemical. The commission aims to bring all glass plants, quarries, metallurgical and general operations into compliance within 30 days.

The operation followed infection by antibiotic resistant pseudomonas from non washing and needle use.
Webster Springs West Virginia Senate President Hans McCourt says he will not remove Sen. Tracy Hylton of Mullens as chairman of the committee probing coal mine refuse dams at least not right away. McCourt placed him as chair after Hylton drafted the resolution establishing the panel and may change if Hylton is elected as a Republican in November.

William M Crowson 74 of Coal City died Thursday at 4 10 p m after a long illness. Born January 30 1898 in Pulaski Virginia he was a retired coal miner and a member of UMWA Local 3767 at Helen. Survived by widow Beckie Farmer Crowson son Fred Dahlgren Va daughter Margie Mae Garten in Japan sister Martha Musselman Christiansburg Va and four grandchildren. Body at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home.
Joseph Ball Shumate 68 of Glen Fork will have funeral services Sunday at 1 p m at Russell Baptist Church Glen Fork with Revs William Lusk and E L Cook officiating. Burial follows at Palm Memorial Gardens Matheny. He died Thursday morning in a Morgantown hospital after a long illness. He was born November 11 193 and was a son of the late Diamond and Etta Cook Shumate. Surviving are his wife Lula Shrewsbury Shumate a daughter Wanda Adkins Keyrock five sons Herman Harless Claude all of Glen Fork Clyde Allen Ky and Firley Pineville a sister Hattie Brooks Sabine four nephews Finley Bryan of Glen Fork Harper Huntington and John Matheny 16 grandchildren and a great grandchild. The body remains at Evans Funeral Home Oceana where friends may call 4 p m to 10 p m Saturday and may call one hour prior to the funeral at the church.
Two lawsuits against White Ridge Coal Co. are filed in Raleigh County Circuit Court. O and W Coal Co. seeks 5462.20 for coal under contract and related damages. Joe L. Lambert claims 2333.08 for unpaid independent contractor work and related costs. Carroll sues Nancy and Leo Long and others to nullify a deed and force a new deed after a disputed land sale. Acme Limestone Co. sues Freddie Nichols for 429.40 on open account. Other claims include 313.74 from Clement L. Schulte and 676.26 against Marilyn Garten. Auto collision case seeks 380 in Glenn Daniel.
A Hong Kong court ordered seizure of two Playboy magazine photos from the September issue. Police sought permission to confiscate at newsstands with Playboy publisher’s counsel Gerald de Basto criticizing the move as out of tune with the times.
