Erosion Threatens Homes On Great Lakes Shoreline
Along Michigan's Great Lakes shore line erosion has swallowed yard and land, threatening hundreds of homes from Benton Harbor to Muskegon. The Michigan Water Resources Commission notes 1 300 miles of shoreline are erodable with over 55 miles already damaged. Costs to protect coasts exceed 100 million dollars, while high lake levels drive ongoing losses and debate over sea walls and zoning rules.
