Oak Hill council orders sidewalk repairs by utility companies and plans to vacate and transfer a long unused 20 foot alley on Virginia Street. The decision includes notifying W. N. Bibb and Mrs. Elizabeth Hindson and awaits a second council vote after public advertisement.
Clarence Ray Woodward waived preliminary hearing on manslaughter charges. Found guilty of drunken driving, he was fined 400 dollars and sentenced to six months in jail, with notice of appeal to Criminal Court. He posted 1000 dollar bond on each case and was released for grand jury action in October. The crash in front of Morton Reaves School killed William Hartley and injured Pauline Thompson. the accident occurred about 6 am Friday.
Five commissioners will meet at 1 p m today to set a just payment for right of way through property obtained by the State Road Commission for the Valley Drive extension of Route 15. Clinton Dew and wife are named in a circuit court order as owners of the property. Commissioners are French Williams J J Bowling O F Cook Luther Fink and Al Liecas.
Raleigh County commissioners appoint Don Wolfe of Merchant's Adjustment Service as first collector of delinquent personal property taxes. He will receive taxpayers lists immediately and begin work soon. Mayor G C Hedltek earlier urged court to appoint a collector for Beckley. Estimated arrears in Beckley range from five to ten thousand dollars.
The Army tests a homey dining concept at Fort Belvoir with four person tables, cloths, flowers, and table service from carts. 207 men of Company A in the School Battalion eat in 15 minutes, with no mess line. If successful, the plan could expand Army wide under Gen. Omar Bradley.
The New York Giants will honor ex bat boy Garth Garreau on Sept. 19 at the Polo Grounds. Garreau, now a Michigan State College student, will wear the uniform he wore last year on his special day. Teaneck residents will honor him and Garreau has written a book about his experiences with the team.
Wyoming County Board of Education extends ten days for bids on Mullens High School annexed gymnasium. Special meeting set for September 18 to review bids. Karen Basham to supervise building program. new schools planned in Brenton Morleysville and Rolla. Construction to start this fall with possible Oceana High School project.
The Associated Press reports mounting prices did not curb demand for new passenger automobiles in the United States. Backlogs reach 7.3 million unfilled orders, with production likely to top 3.9 million cars in 1948, exports and trucks shaping the mix. Car demand remains strong despite price rises, with a large wartime-era backlog and expanding postwar market.
C. E. Jones of United Mine Workers safety indicts the Capell mine incident as preventable. A federal inspectors report assigns the fatal slate fall to improper timbering and inspection gaps, urging on shift roof exams amid changing atmospheric conditions. Jones argued earlier that the site is inconsistently sound. Pro football attendance records for the Cleveland Browns were set in four cities, with 80,067 in Cleveland and 70,060 in New York, among others, all in 1947.
Mullens city council discussed drainage complaints from Highland Avenue and two neighborhood residents seeking property for a city playground. The meeting focused on winter preparation and the need for more efficient street repair, with staff outlining obligations and funding implications.
At the council meeting Harve Herad and L O Gates complained of excess water from Mullens Hill drainage crossing their property. Mrs Josephine Damewood urged grading and surfacing Highland Avenue for safe travel in bad weather. The council eyed grading to a lower level and noted funds must be recharged before hard surfacing. Paul Snyder backed Herald on drainage and offered to lay pipe if city funded it. Gates sought inspection after a neighbor dumped garbage into a drainage ditch. An investigation was promised. Planning members Hash and Cook urged playground property and inquired about street cleaning equipment and marker posts. They noted only two suitable sites and reported steel posts were ordered but delivery could exceed 60 days.
Amedio Angeletti of Eccles died at Kanawha Valley Hospital in Charleston after a highway crash on State Route 3 near Dry Creek. Three others were injured when Spiro Gagrica’s car collided with a tractor trailer driven by Melvin R. De Grass of Van Wert Ohio. No charges have been filed.
Beckley Mayor G C Hedrick urged residents to obtain a релigion from office and secure at least 51 percent of property owners on a street to sign petitions for paving. A current program requires citizen action to include streets. 20 were designated for petition paving.
Isaac Lester Mullens of Bud is listed in Raleigh General Hospital Beckley after a serious motorcycle collision with an automobile on Monday. Mullens Chamber of Commerce will meet at 8 tonight in the Wyoming Hotel.
