Rhode Island town council decrees sidewalks roll up by 9 p m for under 16 and midnight for adults. Bicycles must stop by 8 p m unless lights on. Public music machines stop at 10 p m every night except Saturday when they run until midnight. Traffic and parking system plans to be finalized October 1 says Dr. T G Mc Connell.
In circuit court Judge C M Ward sustained a motion to strike plaintiff C E Mahan Jr administrator verdict for defendants in a death suit over Katie Hunter's death near Scarbro on December 28 The judge said there is a presumption the truck driver was not negligent and that proof of death by negligence is needed He noted the back of the truck could have caused the injuries or the plaintiff could be at fault Also a separate damages case was readied Willeford vs Wingo for 25000 arising from a March accident near Skelton on Route 19 21 with Willeford suffering severe injuries and permanent damage while three died and six injured at the scene from a crowd incident
William Ward Healey 75 of Harper road died at 7 p m in a local hospital from a complication of diseases after a four day illness. Born May 10 1862 in Dayton Ohio he previously lived in Cincinnati and later Beckley where he directed a choir. Healy worked as an accountant for Crab Orchard Improvement Company for three years and is survived by wife, daughter Mrs Mary Healy Granger of Cincinnati, granddaughter Jean M. Granger of Cincinnati, and son John L. Healy of San Francisco. Funeral at 2 30 Sunday with Rev C W Sydnor officiating, Sunset Memorial Park burial. Pallbearers listed.
Three motions for mistrials in the Wheeling income tax case were denied by Federal Judge Harry E. Watkins. Attorneys for George Seibert Theodore Russell and Delegate George Oldham argued after Lias denied immunity. the defendants face charges of conspiring to evade 1931 income taxes with Lias and partners in the numbers lottery.
La Porte Indiana sheriff outlawed kangaroo courts held inside jail bullpens by inmates saying abuses arise. He notes many sheriffs tolerate them to occupy prisoners and prevent mischief. New prisoners are charged with breaking into jail and fined with money, cigarettes, or belongings if unable to pay.
John L. Lewis indicated he will bid for a political alliance of farmers and labor in a CBS radio address from 9 30 to 10 p m est He called farmers natural allies of labor and said the speech would discuss means to consolidate the alliance He plans to critique Democratic leadership and reference the early summer steel strike He will also name officials who betrayed labor and outline future labor policy in a series of weekend talks Also mentioned is Senator Lundeen forecasting a national labor party and William Green set to speak in Dallas Texas on Monday
Dr. H. L. Clay addressed the Kiwanis Club at its lunch meeting stressing fellowship and cooperation to reach goals not possible alone. He outlined why members are Kiwanians and why others should join. The briefing set a high standard for September program planning. Visiting Kiwanians included Dave Rosenberg Charleroi Pa Frank L. Stuck and Edward J. Rule of Princeton.

CHARLESTON The supreme court refused to grant a writ of error for William Brown Read of Four Corners Maryland condemned slayer of Charleston salesman W Earle Dollman. Read was convicted of first degree murder by a Braxton county jury and faces execution next Tuesday at the Moundsville penitentiary after Dollman was found beaten to death in his blazing car near Gassaway last Thanksgiving.
A tiny drought hardy southern pine beetle threatens 15,000 trees at Robbers' Cave state park near Wilburton Oklahoma. National Park Service officials report over 1,000 trees removed since the outbreak began. the beetle targets middle to upper tree sections and destroys the inner bark, crippling nourishment.
Edward J. Skull a Beckley Junior manual training teacher leaves for Frederick Maryland high school this year citing better pay and a stronger retirement system. He will teach general shop including wood work sheet metal cold metal work electricity and drawing. Skull a Stout Institute graduate taught at Woodrow Wilson high school and in War McDowell county before returning to Beckley.
Donald Blevins three year old son of Mr and Mrs H L Blevins of Skelton was taken to a local hospital for tests to determine infantile paralysis. Dr B B Richmond examined him and sent him for a spine puncture to distinguish infantile paralysis from spinal meningitis.
Amoskeag Industries Inc acquired the liquidated Amoskeag Manufacturing Company for five million dollars. Last week in Manchester New Hampshire it declared a 125 percent dividend.
Four Home Fleet destroyers Fury Forester Fortune and Firedrake join five others to sweep the western Mediterranean for guerrilla submarines that torpedoed ships. The move is part of a two pronged British policy combining naval action with allied diplomacy to curb maritime outrages.
Principal C. G. Peregoy of Woodrow Wilson High School announced today that class schedules are prepared and will be handed out Tuesday and Wednesday. Seniors pick up at 9 30 a m Tuesday, juniors at 1 30 p m Tuesday, sophomores at 9 30 a m Wednesday, and freshmen at 1 30 p m Wednesday. Students should report to the auditorium at their assigned time.
In Raleigh County Central grade school hosted the first in a series of organization meetings for principals and teachers on health and conservation. Dr J H Crouch explained the new compulsory diphtheria immunization law for entering school children and two classroom health rules to cut absence by at least 25 percent. Olejar outlined conservation education units tied to geography science and West Virginia club work with aims to foster wise use of natural resources. Teachers will report results to a state committee next summer for revision.
Near sources from the state department say there is no immediate need to invoke the neutrality act in the Japan China conflict. Henry T. Hoffman of Jackson Missouri arrives at Beckley college to teach chemistry algebra first year German and geography. He has 15 years of high school teaching experience in Missouri New Mexico and Kansas. Hoffman graduated from Cape Girardeau State Teachers College in 1923 and earned a 1928 master’s from Columbia University Teachers College with a focus on secondary education. He pursued further graduate work at Missouri University George Peabody College and Louisiana State University.
Beckley resident Woodrow Fink was released today on a $20 bond after a misdemeanor arrest by Special Officer Howard Keat Keatley. He was charged with driving an automobile with license plates that belonged to Phillips Motor Company. Fink was arrested last night.
Six men diving into a Brooklyn creek to save a fellow swimmer were arrested on vagabondage charges. A coal barge captain, alarmed by the fracas, summoned police who rescued all seven men from the water and detained the rescuers.
Shanghai reports say Japan threatened to shell American and other foreign warships after Chinese forces repelled a major Japanese push. Shells hit the foreign district, wounding several including a British volunteer and Chinese, while Chinese gunners scored hits on the Japanese consulate. News notes mutinous reports from the north and renewed artillery on the Hongkow area.
