Fiddlers Play In Holiday Rain At Sophia Coal City
Rain spoiled a holiday for miners and reduced crowds at Sophia where half the expected attendees stayed home. In Coal City a fiddlers contest moved indoors after rain halted the program Sunday and Monday performances continued under heavy downpour. About five thousand people were expected in Coal City over the weekend if not for rain.

Blast Suspends Mine Operations at Hempville Shaft

The Rev W B Harvey longtime Beckley Baptist pastor returns to lead both morning and evening services this Sunday 11 a m and 730 p m. He and Mrs Harvey arrive from Chattanooga Tenn to accompany their son B H Harvey who enters the senior class at McCallie preparatory school for the winter term. The Beckley church built at a cost of 250000 has nearly all funds paid with 72000 remaining. Harvey previously preached in Beckley since 1931 and has served in Knoxville and Oklahoma City.

Bigamy Charge Holds Calloway Miner in Jail

Sixty five county high school students receive NYA student aid for 1937-38. The county superintendent’s office was advised by state officials that the county was allocated 456 for the year, distributed monthly.
