Mystery surrounds Havana shooting

AP reports Fidel Castro’s military post commander was hospitalized with a bullet wound. El Mundo offered no shooting details. Exiled editor Barletta claimed an attack, while Castro’s office denied any assassination attempt. Police gave no official explanation.

Reds Threaten To Boycott UN Arms Debate

United Nations New York AP reports the Soviet Union threatened to boycott the U N disarmament debate if the United States and allies press Western arms reduction plans. Soviet Delegate Valerian Zorin accused the West of procrastination and blamed them for the disarmament deadlock while tying it to Khrushchev’s calls to reorganize the U N secretariat and the potential to oppose a worldwide police force.

Temperance League Attacks West Virginia Liquor Chief

In Charleston AP reports the West Virginia Temperance League condemns Liquor Commissioner Morris Shawkey for stocking 2000 cases of half pint bottles before the November 8 election. Beckley Loses City Census. Raleigh County Gains Tally

Preliminary census reports show Beckley dropping to 18,364 residents from 18,489, a loss of 125, while Raleigh County rises to 76,657 from 76,525, a gain of 132. Beckley’s 1950 population was 19,397. county totals lag 19,748 behind 1950. Wyoming and Fayette counties fall by 3,547 and 20,875 respectively. Area towns listed with their current figures include Fayetteville, Hinton, Mullens, Oak Hill, Princeton, and others.

Barron Accusation Lacks Substantiation in DPA Claim

Charleston AP report: director Thomas R. Egbert of the Department of Public Assistance said no substantiation exists for a charge that a relief recipient was ordered to pay $20 a month to Summers County Republican chairman for DPA checks to be stopped. The accuser was W. W. Barron, Democratic nominee for governor, naming Charles R. Cooper of Clayton. Cooper reportedly owed Arnold Harris, GOP county chairman, for groceries from Harris store. Egbert said no DPA employee violated regulations by contacting Cooper about the overdue account, likening the claim to accusing them of contacting 50,000 other monthly check recipients.

Bet Maverick Leads Local Cowboy Contest

Bet Maverick led the local cowboy contest during the Follies of 1960 festivities sponsored by the Junior Department of the Beckley Women’s Club. Gene Schlatterer of the Optimist Club holds the top chips at $5.01, followed by Cluck Conners-Trifleman J Justin Carr with $3.65. Hal Materson Johnny Jones Wyatt Urpe Matt Killen and Halladin also listed with smaller amounts.

Bloody Thumbprint Convicts Murderer in San Francisco Slaying

Robert Lee Kidd was convicted in San Francisco of torturing and killing Albert Clarke, a 71 year old junk dealer in 1954. A bloody thumbprint on a 19th century sword tied Kidd to the crime, found near Clarke’s mutilated body. Kidd, 37, denied the murder but acknowledged being in Clarke’s shop. he faced a gas chamber death penalty or life imprisonment after the jury returns on Oct. 26.

Barron proposes IDA plan amid Beckley campaigns

Democratic campaign activity in Beckley and across West Virginia intensified with Eleanor Roosevelt and Lyndon B. Johnson slated to speak in Beckley and Charleston respectively. Retaliation By Castro Expected

Bays Employe Kills Himself in Beckley Car

The Beckley auto industry community is shaken by a second carbon monoxide suicide in 16 months. Edgar L. Bowman Jr. was found dead at 7:22 a.m. in a Buick Inc. shop car on May today, following a recent surgery. County coroner Dr. S. A. Ford said Bowman died 12 to 15 hours earlier. Two coworkers discovered the body, and Bowman left no note. His wife Opal Bowman died months earlier of pancreatic cancer. Patrolman J. W. Hutchinson and Lonnie Price investigated.

One in four West Virginians eligible for commodities

About 280,156 individuals were certified as of Sept. 30 as eligible to receive surplus foods under the welfare phase. More than 153,000 of these were in eight southern counties hit by the coal-field recession. 243,266 eligible recipients actually received commodities last month, with 133,852 in the southern counties.
