In Chicago on January 26 1863 Abraham Lincoln wrote a 94 word note on White House stationery promoting Major General Joseph Hooker to command the Army of the Potomac. An estate inventory in Cook County Probate Court set the letter’s value at $35 000 as part of Alfred W Stern’s estimated 3.5 million estate. Stern who died May 3 at 79 left the document to the Library of Congress and had donated about 1 million in Lincoln lore to the library.
