West Virginia erosion concern grows as soil program expands
Dr. Rugh Bennett of the Soil Conservation Service told the West Virginia Soil Conservation Society meeting that over 4 million acres in the state are severely eroded, with 19 million acres moderately eroded. He urged long term action, noting forest depletion and the need for contour cultivation, cover crops, strip-cropping, and more ponds and drainage works to restore productivity. He cited gains in crop yields from conservation and discussed plans to repurpose land and expand woodland management.
