Reporter Claiborne described inmates at the DC jail near RFK Stadium and the Armory pressing guards to move police cars and news cameras as eight inmates escaped eight days earlier. Three guards were suspended while a federal grand jury probes the escape. talks yielded reforms after open bargaining with officials and inmates.
The federal hearing on the Blacksville No. 1 mine tragedy will add at least 38 more witnesses before it concludes. The proceeding was set to resume today in Morgantown West Virginia with further testimony planned.

West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals upholds a Raleigh County Circuit Court verdict setting aside a jury verdict for Mrs. Louise Ramey and granting a new trial in favor of retired Lt. Col. Roy Lee Thomas. The 3-2 decision held Ramey negligent and Thomas not contributorily negligent after the 1969 Heber and Prince crossing incident.
UPI photographer David Kennerly flew over Huong Phung near Saigon as government jets bombed and Palmed the hamlet. The village burned with tanks firing and bomb craters on the highway. About 200 Viet Cong reportedly held Xom Luoi 22 miles north of Saigon with at least two .51 caliber guns. residents fled.

Mrs Sarah Margaret Shuff 79 of 106 Kinzer Street died Tuesday night after brief illness in a local hospital. Born May 29 1893 Springdale she was daughter of the late Harvey and Ellen Shepherd. Solomon Smallwood Finneral 79 of Harlem Heights died Tuesday night in Oak Hill hospital after a short illness. He was born November 25 1892 in North Carolina son of the late David and Virginia Smallwood a retired plant worker formerly with Alley and a member of the First Baptist Church at Harlem Heights. He is survived by a daughter Lucille Meadows of Fayetteville and one grandchild. The body is at Ritchie Johnson Funeral Parlor awaiting arrangements.

Cynthia Frederick, 21, wins approval from the Des Moines Park Board to place two handmade concrete headstones on her infant children's graves at Glen Dale Cemetery. Frederick, whose husband serves in the Army in West Germany, spent over 100 hours crafting the stones.
