The House via voice vote sent to the Senate a measure authorizing 75 million dollars annually for seven years to fund new state medical schools and expand existing ones. WV lawmakers seek Marshall University in Huntington as a beneficiary. VA would locate sites and ensure geographic spread.

Belfast Unrest Leaves City in Flames After Gunfire Attacks

In Belfast crowds of Protestants roamed the streets burning two Catholic bars a factory and Catholic owned shops. An army spokesman said Protestant mobs erected street obstacles and gunfire wounded a British soldier while a policeman was kidnapped and released. Police and troops cleared streets as 600 people have died in three years of sectarian violence.

Report Luncheon Set Friday For UF

UF divisions in Raleigh County will hold a noon luncheon at Henry's Restaurant Patio Room to report progress in soliciting donations. Thomas Stauffer urged division chairs and volunteers to attend the Friday session, the second reporting meeting in the drive to raise 95 000 dollars for UF agencies. Last week's pledges, led by the Pacemaker division, placed the drive at 27 percent of its goal.

Eight Point Memo Approved Between MFHP and RCCAA

An eight point memorandum of understanding between Mountaineer Family Health Plan and Raleigh City Community Action Association was approved by MFHP board with RCCAA to adopt provisions. The plan includes protections for nonpayment during monthly dues and a sliding scale to be implemented by 1973. ACCAA cites a strong contract and unified purpose as negotiations progress.

Chile Declares Emergency Amid Truckers Strike

The government invoked a state of emergency in about half the country effectively placing police under military control in 12 provinces. The walkout disrupted food and fuel deliveries as 335 abandoned trucks blocked major highways and stores ran dry. The strike targets plans for a state owned trucking firm in Aysen Province. The interior minister said the action is politically motivated and 400 people, including the truckers' leaders, were arrested.

A Raleigh County Airport Authority suit to collect $125 monthly airport operating fees from Jack Clemens was dismissed for lack of court jurisdiction. Alligator Catch Tops 13 Day Hunt ending in Cheniere

A 13 foot 7 inch alligator was the top catch of the 13 day season which ended September 18 in Cheniere Louisiana. It marked the first legal alligator hunt in the United States since 1965.

Raleigh County Group Seeks Road Upgrades With State Help

A Raleigh County committee met Charleston Highway Commissioner William Ritchie to press for upgrading six roads including White Oak Mountain Lillybrook Mountain Sullivan Toney Fork Rock Creek Lick and Pluto in Richmond District. Participants said the meeting yielded more engagement than prior flat refusals and several road issues will be reviewed with a follow up in about a week.
