Thanksgiving Service Planned at Pilgrim Holiness Church

A Thanksgiving service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Pilgrim Holiness Church in Baileysville. The Rev. H. A. Zufal will lead with prayers and testimonies, assisted by singer and chalk artist Mrs. Lindall Beverley. Israel's railway lines cover 982 miles.

First Aid Lesson Taught at Gatewood Farm Club Meeting

Mrs. A. E. Whanger led a first aid session at the Gatewood Farm Women's Club on Thursday. The group gathered at 10 a.m. at Mrs. Glendon Riner's home, with a covered-dish lunch at noon, a Pieatsslving devotional by Mrs. Walter Gaft, and plans for a Thanksgiving basket and Christmas gift exchange.

Akers Funeral Slated Tuesday in Pax Advent Church

Homer Martell Akers 84 of Long Branch will be buried in Humphrey Cemetery after funeral services at 2 pm Tuesday at Pax Advent Christian Church led by Rev Homer Baxter. A retired carpenter, he died Sunday at his home of a heart attack after 18 months illness. He was born July 14 1873 in Floyd County Virginia. Survived by four sons Donald Russell Lawrence Douglas, two daughters Mary and Blanche, seven grandchildren.

Safe Robbers Loot Alposa Store in Slab Fork Mine Office

Burglars battered into the Alposa Store and Slab Fork Coal Co office, finishing a 10 day job. Loss pegged at $260 including $60 in post office receipts. building and vault damages over $1,000. Store manager Burbridge Adams found rear door open about 11 am. State Police suspect vault doors pried with heavy bars. fingerprints collected. Burglars reportedly sought cash, but coal company moved to checks last February.

Another School Theft Reported

Mullens West Virginia area reports Glen Rogers High School burglaries over the weekend. Doors to furnace room office and storage were forced. A coin box with about ten dollars from a soft drink machine was taken. The projector speaker and desk des ransacked. Superintendent Morgan warned against overnight cash and noted prior burglaries at Oceana Itmann and Maben. State and county police investigate.

A three room Wyco house occupied by Audley and wife Shrewsbury was destroyed by predawn fire. One choir member was injured. cause undetermined. Firefighters from Mullens and Pineville fought the blaze as Wyco community endures repeat fires including a half million dollar tipple fire on Sept. 22. Hubert Adams Jr. arrived home from Germany due to his father’s serious heart attack at Island Creek Coal Co. Welch’s Stevens Clinic Hospital. In Oak Hill, William Drennen Jr. faces reckless driving charges after his car struck a parked vehicle and rolled onto a sidewalk. he was treated and released.

Sophia Scouts Honor Leader Mrs Saunders Feted

Sophia Brownie Troop 72 celebrated scout leader Calvin Saunders birthday with a surprise party at Tuesday’s meeting. Members presented a gift and refreshments were provided by Mrs J B Riggs. Brownies prepared Thanksgiving hospital favors for Beckley Girl Scout office then area hospitals. Plans were made to start on Christmas girls.

Two Men Held For Grand Jury

In Pineville two men Raymond Gilmore, 19, and Franklin Thompson, 21, both of Maben, faced preliminary hearings on breaking and entering charges for a Maben School burglary. Magistrate W. P. Wilson ordered them held for grand jury with no bond. They were later moved to Raleigh County authorities for questioning in a separate Amigo Elementary School case.

Mabscott Lions Jack Hutchens and H V Waybright attended the Sophia Lions Club on Wednesday. James Barnell led the session discussing delegations to the State Lions Convention in Huntington and the National Lions Club Convention in Chicago in 1958. Pete Hornbeck was guest of honor as club members listed include W W Lawson Fred Williams Rev Bill Brown and others.
