Investigation To Start On Fan Tragedy

An angry group of officials opened an inquiry into the slow motion collapse of a home made scaffold that killed Fred H. Linder and William Craig and injured 82 at the start of the Memorial Day 500 mile race in Indianapolis. Coroner Roy B. Storms blamed Speedway management for years of ignoring his safety protests while Indiana Attorney General Edwin K. Steers said a safety review of the privately owned track would be conducted. The 30 foot aluminum tower, packed with as many as 130 spectators, toppled as fans leaned forward. Over 200,000 spectators watched. Witnesses noted fans remained near the wreckage as rescue efforts began. The scaffold seated in stands rented for 5 and 10 dollars. Speed way officials noted private owners have long hauled in towers without extensive inspection beyond looking safe.
