Gov. W. W. Barron said his administration would back House Speaker Julius Singleton, State Atty. Gen. C. Donald Robertson, or Commerce Commissioner Hulett C. Smith in next year's governor race. He did not rule out others and noted Rep. Harley Staggers’s interest, while saying Rep. John Slack would not run. Barron also touched on a possible reappointment of the State Motor Vehicles Commission.
William Grigsby, 47, Denver County Jail janitor, died after three weeks living with a new liver in a pioneering transplant. Pneumonia, contracted in a sterilized Veterans Administration Hospital room, is cited as the probable cause though surgeons say the liver procedure was technically successful. Autopsy results were expected.

Francis Keiling, assistant district forester for West Virginia and parts of Virginia, resigns after ten years with the Department of Natural Resources. Effective June 18, he becomes forester for J P Hamber Lumber Co. in Kenova West Virginia. He will live in Beckley with his wife and three sons. Carl Lucas notes his proficiency and wide friendships for the department.
State Road Commission opened bids for road projects totaling about 3.6 million dollars across 47 counties. In Raleigh County 1.4 miles on Secondary 1913 was resurfaced for 36497 by Acme Constructing Co. of Beckley, plus 3.3 miles Meadow Bridge-Danese road in Fayette for 38960 to D M Bostic and 3.5 miles Glen Fork Jesse Road in Wyoming for 57870 to Anderson Black Rock Co. Most projects use state funding. one federal state project covers grading drainage paving and utility relocations at Wheeling.
Allegheny Power System officials say construction will start next year on the first 500000 kilowatt section of the Fort Martin generating station on the Pennsylvania West Virginia border near Point Marion. The facility should be completed by 1967 with a second 500000 kilowatt unit planned for 1970. The site sits on a 900 acre tract along the Monongahela River about eight miles from Morgantown West Virginia in an area rich in coal reserves.
Vatican reports Pope John XXIII, age 81, is in critical condition with severe internal hemorrhages. Officials describe an abnormal growth, with medical experts cautious, noting a possible cancer while Vatican wording remains vague. The pope expressed readiness for God's will, hoping his life could aid the Ecumenical Council.
